Interesting space at the Southern folk cake festival!

On March 29, the Organizing Committee of the Hung Kings' Commemoration Day and the 12th Southern Traditional Cake Festival in 2025 (the festival) held a press conference with the participation of Vice Chairwoman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep and many delegates from inside and outside the city.

Information at the press conference said that this year's festival gathered 231 booths of units, businesses, and artisans from 18 provinces and cities. Accordingly, there were 118 booths of traditional cakes, 59 booths of regional specialties, 40 booths of cuisine, etc.

The festival aims to preserve and promote the value of Vietnamese culinary culture in general and Southern folk cakes in particular, contributing to promoting Southern folk cakes to domestic and foreign tourists. The festival also creates conditions for businesses and folk cake artisans to connect, cooperate, promote investment, and develop typical products to serve domestic consumption and export. Through the festival, provinces and cities continue to strengthen connections and promote local specialties to tourists near and far.

The festival organizers will arrange "Folk cake space of 03 regions", "Modern cake space", "Culinary space", "Space for OCOP products, souvenirs, regional specialties", "Space for displaying and promoting fruits, ornamental flowers, regions" as interesting highlights to attract many visitors to visit and experience. The festival activities will take place in Binh Thuy District (Can Tho City) from April 4 to 8.

Vice Chairwoman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep said that the Hung Kings' death anniversary and festival activities must be practical, creative, attractive, joyful, effective, economical, safe, ensuring security and order, fire prevention, environmental sanitation, not ostentatious or wasteful. All products sold at the festival must have specific prices, ensure quality, food hygiene and safety, and have a clear brand and origin. This year's festival organizing committee decided to reduce the booth rental price from 8 million VND to 6 million VND to create conditions for many traditional cake artisans to participate, creating unique products that contribute to attracting many visitors and experiences.

According to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Le, Director of Can Tho City Tourism Development Center, the main activities of this year's festival include the festival opening program (Can Tho City Radio and Television Station broadcast live), folk cake contest, lobster pancake promotion (large diameter cake), promotion and display of "The biggest banh chung in the Mekong Delta", Southern folk cake making performance for visitors to experience with artisans, exchange of traditional music, folk songs, and folk songs from provinces and cities, bonsai contest, band performance, folk cake offering ceremony on Hung King's death anniversary, tour promotion programs, attractive tourist destinations, and trade activities to serve domestic and foreign tourists. The festival organizers have invited Miss Vietnam 2024 Nguyen Ngoc Kieu Duy to be the image representative and make a trailer for this year's folk cake festival.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, said that the 2025 festival revolves around the theme "Preserving and promoting the value of Southern folk cakes". The folk cake contest and experience area is designed with a typical Southern thatched house background, inside are decorated with bamboo beds, bamboo chairs and typical folk cake making tools. Coming to this area, people immerse themselves in the old space, reminiscing when witnessing with their own eyes the scene of drying rice, sifting rice, soaking rice, soaking sticky rice, grinding flour, scraping coconut, caramelizing sugar... serving the making of folk cakes.

The festival is also an opportunity to connect, promote investment, and promote green tourism to develop rapidly and sustainably...", Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan informed.

According to Mr. Truong Cong Quoc Viet, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Can Tho City, in the first quarter of 2025, the number of visitors and tourists to Can Tho City reached over 1.6 million, an increase of 04% over the same period last year. Over 806 thousand guests stayed, an increase of 05% over the same period. Tourism revenue was over 1,680 billion VND, an increase of 06% over the same period in 2024, reaching 25.9% of the yearly plan.
