On the afternoon of September 27, Mr. Nguyen Duy Thuy, Principal of Trung Ly Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities, said that Deputy Director of Thanh Hoa Department of Education and Training Nguyen Van Dinh had just awarded a certificate of merit and reward to teacher Bui Thi Cham, a teacher of the school, for her excellent achievements during the recent flood days.
Ms. Cham is an example for teachers and students to follow in terms of the responsibility of teachers in caring for and protecting students' lives from floods.
Before that, at around 12:25 on September 22, after lunch, Ms. Cham saw that it was pouring rain for a long time. Being on duty at the dormitory of the school, a geography teacher with knowledge of natural disasters, she was worried that after many days of heavy rain, the soil and rocks on the hills behind the dormitory were soaked with water and could easily cause landslides.
At that time, hundreds of students were taking a nap, it would be very dangerous if a flash flood or landslide occurred. Thinking about it, Ms. Cham rushed to the dormitory to check and saw rocks and soil starting to fall, and mud flowing down from the hill.
Seeing signs of danger, Ms. Cham quickly ran to each room to wake up the students and ask them to move to the school's classroom.
Then, Ms. Cham ran down to the classroom and used a loudspeaker to announce that the back of the dormitory was experiencing a landslide, asking all students to quickly run out of their rooms and move to the classroom area to ensure safety.
Ten minutes later, hundreds of cubic meters of rock and soil from the hill behind collapsed into the dormitory, destroying three rooms.
