Speaking on June 18 during a visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani affirmed: "Gulf countries are decisive players in Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East, to stabilize crisis areas and strengthen joint action to prevent illegal migration and fight against human trafficking. The Italian government is building a strategic foreign policy 'with increasing attention to the Southern Hemisphere'".
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani affirmed that understanding the social, cultural and religious perspectives of African countries in the Gulf is of utmost importance in dealing with the above issues. At the same time, this politician believes that his visit will open a new chapter of cooperation between the two countries.
The issue of controlling the flow of migrants and the problem of illegal immigration is becoming a top priority for the Italian government at the present time.
In related news on the same day, the Italian coast guard rescued a group of 159 refugees and migrants from a small boat in distress, about 150 nautical miles south of Sicily. The group included about 50 minors, including a 13-year-old boy with quadriplegia and an 18-month-old boy with a suspected skin infection. The group has now been brought ashore in the port town of Pozzallo, southern Sicily.
