(CLO) An Italian navy ship carried 49 migrants rescued in international waters to Albania on Tuesday, a new attempt by Italy to implement a controversial plan to send migrants to the neighboring country.
The Cassiopea navy ship carrying the migrants arrived at the port of Shengjin, Albania early Tuesday morning. They will be identified at a facility before being transferred to a detention center about 20 kilometers away.

The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, has built two reception centers in Albania, the first agreement between an EU country and a non-EU country aimed at reducing the number of migrants arriving by sea.
However, the centres have been empty since November last year, after judges in Rome questioned the legality of the scheme and ordered the first two groups of migrants held in Albania to be sent back to Italy.
On Monday, Ilaria Salis, a member of the European Parliament from Italy's left-wing party, criticized the Italian government for transferring "innocent people fleeing war and poverty" to another country, in violation of international law and human rights.
The European Court of Justice is expected to review Italy's plan in the coming weeks and rule on whether it complies with EU law.
