The source said that since the afternoon, fighter jets have attacked about 100 rocket launchers consisting of about 1,000 barrels. "The IDF (Israel Defense Forces) will continue its operations to degrade the infrastructure and capabilities of the Hezbollah terrorist organization to defend the State of Israel," the IDF said.

The heavy shelling followed attacks earlier this week blamed on Israel by Lebanon and Hezbollah, which detonated Hezbollah radios and pagers, killing 37 people and wounding some 3,000 in Lebanon.

Israel dropped dozens of bombs across southern Lebanon in a late Thursday operation, three Lebanese security sources said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel will continue military action against Hezbollah.

Faced with the risk of escalating and spreading war in the Middle East, countries have called for restraint from all sides. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy called for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.

The US has also expressed concern about further escalation. The White House said a diplomatic solution to the war between Israel and Hezbollah was possible and urgent. White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing that the US was “fearful and concerned about the possibility of escalation”.
