Despite the leak of classified US documents on October 18 about some related information, Israel still carried out an attack in Iran in the early morning of October 26, airstrikes on the capital Tehran and the nearby city of Karaj. Israel claimed to have accurately attacked military targets in response to Iranian attacks, including the launch of more than 200 ballistic missiles on October 1.

Israel retaliates against Iran with airstrikes: 3 waves, 100 aircraft

"Days of Repentance"

According to IRNA, the explosions were heard in western Tehran at around 2:15 a.m. local time. Iran and Iraq immediately closed their airspace, although they reopened it later that day. US and Israeli officials said the Israeli attack took place in three waves, with the first targeting air defense systems, the second and third focusing on bases, missile and drone production sites. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later released images of Israeli military chief of staff Herzi Halevi and Israeli Air Force (IAF) commander Tomber Bar at the underground Israeli Air Force base in Tel Aviv to coordinate the attack.

According to The Jerusalem Post , Israel deployed more than 100 aircraft to participate in the attack, initially targeting radar systems in Syria to "blind" Iran's capabilities, before hitting strategic Iranian sites. This large-scale attack involved many aircraft, including F-35 stealth fighters, after traveling about 2,000 km.

Israel's Kan 11 station reported that the attack ended at 5:45 a.m. the same day. The IDF announced that it had achieved its objectives and that the planes had returned safely. The Times of Israel reported that the military operation was called "Days of Repentance" and that the IDF focused only on attacking Iranian military facilities, including air defense systems and ballistic missile production facilities used to attack Israel on April 14 and October 1. The IDF warned that if Iran "starts a new escalation, Israel will be forced to respond."

Iran threatens retaliation

Iran said the Israeli attack was "successfully thwarted" and caused "limited damage". According to Iran's Air Defense Force, Israel targeted military centers in Tehran, Khuzestan and Ilam provinces. Iran's Tasnim news agency quoted a source as saying the country was preparing to retaliate.

"There is no doubt that Israel will face a proportionate response for any action it takes," the source said. Iranian media said that reports of 100 Israeli military aircraft participating in the attack were "a complete lie, as Israel is trying to exaggerate the weakness of its attack." The Tasnim report said the Israeli planes had not even entered Iranian airspace.

CNN quoted US National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett as saying that the US did not participate in the above Israeli operation, and said that "the raid on military targets in Iran was an act of self-defense and a response to the ballistic missile attack on Israel on October 1". US officials said that Israel informed the US about the time of the raid a few hours before the attack. Meanwhile, Sky News Arabia quoted a source saying that Russia had warned Iran in advance, a few hours before the Israeli airstrike. In addition, Israeli media quoted officials as saying that Israel sent a message to Iran on October 25, warning Tehran not to retaliate.

Many sides speak up

Following the Israeli attack, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin spoke by phone with his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant, stressing the US “strengthening its force posture” to protect US and Israeli personnel. Austin reaffirmed the US’ “ironclad commitment” to Israel’s security and right to self-defense. A senior US official said President Joe Biden had previously “encouraged” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to design a response to Iran that would deter future attacks.

For his part, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said that Israel had the right to defend itself against Iran, and called on all parties to exercise restraint and for Iran not to retaliate. In the region, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Iraq and Hamas in Gaza strongly condemned Israel's actions.

Oil prices on edge amid Middle East tensions

Financial and investment magazine Barron's reported yesterday that the impact of violence in the Middle East on the market was relatively limited after Israel launched an airstrike on Iran. The airstrike took place early this morning when major markets were closed for the weekend. However, shares of the US Oil Fund, an investment fund that tracks crude oil prices, were up 1.2% in after-hours trading. Crude oil futures also rose 2.14%.

Oil prices rose last week amid reports that Israel was preparing for a major attack on Iran, although gains were capped by renewed ceasefire talks in the Gaza Strip. WTI closed at $71.70 a barrel on October 25, up 2.2%, while Brent crude rose 2.2% to $76.05 a barrel, according to Reuters.

Senior analyst Phil Flynn at Price Futures Group (USA) said the market is fluctuating while waiting for answers to the situation regarding tensions in the Middle East and the US election, according to Reuters.
