Yen exchange rate trend forecast
Following the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) decision to raise interest rates in July, Japan's stock and currency markets have seen major fluctuations.
Japan’s core consumer price index (CPI) – a measure of inflation excluding fresh food – rose 2.7% year-on-year, up from a 2.6% gain in June. The increase was in line with market expectations and marked the 28th consecutive month that core inflation in Japan has been at or above the BOJ’s 2% target.
“The increase in core inflation reflects the government’s cut in utility bill subsidies for households. Excluding that, inflation is actually falling,” Masato Koike, senior economist at Sompo Institute Plus, told Reuters.
Inflation data is a key factor in the BOJ’s interest rate decisions. In July, the BOJ surprised markets by raising interest rates to a 15-year high and signaled it would continue to raise rates until inflation reaches its 2% target on a sustainable basis.
Accordingly, this tough stance of the BOJ caused the depreciating Yen to suddenly reverse and increase in price, while the Japanese stock market had its sharpest decline since 1987. After that, the Japanese stock market quickly stabilized but the Yen continued to maintain an upward trend.
“Coin volatility has probably peaked this year as the unwinding of the carry trade has partially taken place and central bank actions may no longer surprise the market,” said Hugh Chung, chief investment advisor at wealth and fund management platform Endowus.
If the BOJ continues to raise interest rates, while the US and other Western economies cut interest rates, the Yen could appreciate further.
