(CLO) On November 15, in Hanoi, the National Archives Center I coordinated with the National Academy of Public Administration to organize a discussion with the theme "Memory Box 4.0" for experts and historians to exchange and express their personal views to recall historical memories.

Speaking at the seminar, Ms. Tran Thi Mai Huong - Director of National Archives Center I said that over the years, National Archives Center I has promoted its mission, organized activities to share archival documents with the community, thereby partly meeting the public's desires and needs to learn about Vietnamese culture and history.

However, in today's digital age, each of us has our own memories, which carry positive energy, so those memories need to be shared in the community, passed down from generation to generation so that the archival value will last forever, continuing the history of the country.

Director of National Archives Center I Tran Thi Mai Huong shared at the seminar.

"The event takes place with the aim of connecting young people more closely with archives and personal memories in the flow of history. At the same time, this is also an opportunity for each individual to share and discuss their own "box" as a metaphor for preserving memories of history, culture and people. Through that, the public gradually approaches the connection between collective memory, context, and images of Vietnamese people through historical periods, thereby connecting and sharing between the past, present and future" - Ms. Tran Thi Mai Huong added.

At the discussion, historian Duong Trung Quoc, General Secretary of the Vietnam Historical Science Association, shared: "The French colonial period was a period of many changes for the nation, but it must also be admitted that the technology brought by Western civilization, especially photography, has given us the opportunity to preserve heroic pages of history. Through the photos, we can know and understand the stories, emotions, and circumstances at that time. Not only that, we can also copy hundreds of thousands of copies and spread them so that the community can feel them together."

"Sharing is the best way to preserve precious memories. Because if a photo or a memorable memory is only kept privately by an individual and not shared with the community, the value of those memories will not be sustainable, not long-lasting and with just a small risk, it will disappear" - Mr. Duong Trung Quoc affirmed.

Also at the discussion, historian Duong Trung Quoc introduced and shared with readers books and photo documents about the country's historical periods from many authors who are photographers in Vietnam and abroad. According to Mr. Quoc, when moving moments are "stilled" under the lens, that is the most effective way to preserve them, closest to the truth.

In addition, the discussion also had the presence of British photographer Andy Soloman - owner of the exhibition "Hanoi: A Time to Remember" held to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of Hanoi (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2024).

Mr. Andy Soloman shared that when he came to Hanoi in 1992, the atmosphere and warm welcome from the people of Hanoi made him want to stay and build a life in this city, as well as use his camera to capture precious moments of the Capital during the past war. Through those images, many foreigners and the younger generation can visualize the dramatic changes of Vietnam over the past 30 years.

Throughout the discussion, experts and historians shared their views on "Memory Box 4.0" so that everyone could better understand and grasp its meaning. It can be affirmed that, in the booming digital age, personal memories play an important role in continuing the flow of history, becoming the "glue" in the process of preserving and promoting good values...
