The Ministry of Education and Training proposed to the Government that the high school graduation exam be conducted in four subjects, including two compulsory subjects: literature and mathematics, and two elective subjects from among foreign languages, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economic and legal education, information technology, and technology.
Schools change teaching and learning methods for students to suit the 2018 General Education Program and high school graduation exams from 2025.
K TEST BELONGS TO APPLICATION SKILLS
Leaders of high schools in Ho Chi Minh City expressed their agreement with this proposal and said that from now on, there should be teaching and learning plans to meet the goals of the 2018 General Education Program so that students can complete high school with the best results and have an advantage when participating in university and college entrance exams.
Mr. Do Minh Hoang, Director of Chu Van An Continuing Education Center (District 5, Ho Chi Minh City), said that in order to best prepare students, schools and teachers need to plan the compilation of test requirements to be consistent with the orientation and goals of the 2018 General Education Program. Specifically, the requirements of the tests are aimed at testing the knowledge and skills required by the program. In addition, promoting individual capacity through the application of knowledge and solving specific requirements. According to Mr. Hoang, the program is unique, but each school and student study a different set of textbooks, so it is no longer possible to test general knowledge as before.
From the fact that students study different sets of textbooks, Ms. Hoang Thi Hao, Principal of Dao Son Tay High School (Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City) said: "The test matrix will ensure the required knowledge, test more on practicality and apply knowledge to solve specific requirements of the test".
Mr. Nguyen Duy Tuyen, Principal of Nguyen Khuyen High School (District 10, Ho Chi Minh City), said that after students choose their exam subjects, teachers will focus on guiding students to apply knowledge to solve practical situations and requirements that guide the educational program, not on "testing" how much knowledge they have mastered as before.
The principal of Nguyen Khuyen High School added that the school will have instructions and plans. When the assessment test no longer has major and minor subjects, teachers and students will have to change teaching and learning methods to equip students with fundamental knowledge and basic skills. Therefore, the tests will not test academic knowledge but will focus on testing knowledge and skills to apply to solve situations and apply in practice. With that knowledge, students will have many ways to apply and solve exercises... to be able to meet the exam after 3 years of studying the new program.
Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City), said that of course, priority will be given to exam subjects, but for the remaining subjects, teachers and students must still ensure the curriculum, knowledge and skills required to avoid the situation of lopsided learning, not wanting to study if there is no exam.
If following the 4-subject high school graduation exam plan, foreign language will be one of the 2 optional subjects.
EARLY CAREER ORIENTATION
Mr. Pham Le Thanh, a teacher at Nguyen Hien High School (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City), said that with the high school graduation exam plan of 2 compulsory subjects and 2 optional subjects, students need to research and assess their strengths with their future career orientation to choose and build a foundation for studying and nurturing subjects to serve that career orientation.
For example, if your career orientation is related to languages, you need to develop your foreign language skills and can choose English along with another subject. If you have strengths and career orientation related to social sciences, you can do in-depth research and learn the basic knowledge of history and geography. If you have an inclination towards natural sciences and engineering, you will invest and develop more in physics and chemistry.
However, Mr. Thanh also noted that whether choosing a career related to nature or society, tools such as information technology and foreign languages are always necessary for the current strong trend of integration and digital transformation. Therefore, students should not take these subjects lightly but must have a roadmap to equip themselves with knowledge right from high school level so that they can continue to develop at higher levels of education.
Meanwhile, according to the Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School, career orientation for students will be carried out as soon as they are admitted to grade 10, not waiting until they apply for the high school graduation exam. Thus, students will choose subjects they love, have strengths in, and are suitable for the university entrance exam combination to prepare for the high school graduation exam right from grade 10. Based on this reality, leaders of high schools also asked universities to announce the entrance exam combinations early.
Encourage extra foreign language points, soon announce sample exam questions
Mr. Huynh Thanh Phu, Principal of Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) said that foreign languages are skills and luggage, so students must obviously prepare, and should not think that if they become elective subjects, they will be distracted and have to take exams to study. However, he also suggested that the Ministry could consider giving extra points to candidates who do not choose foreign languages but have high results in international certificates that are valuable and prestigious worldwide. This could encourage students to equip themselves with better foreign language skills.
Principal of Dao Son Tay High School Hoang Thi Hao said that teachers are eagerly waiting for the sample questions of the 2025 high school graduation exam. Because the goal of the 2018 General Education Program is to develop capacity, education is oriented towards practical application and career orientation while reality is vast, teachers need a clear view to have the most effective preparation plan for students.
