Dinh Van Trung is studying at Dien Chau 2 High School, Nghe An. Trung said that the reason he made the pesticide spraying rig was because he witnessed his parents, farmers, having to carry heavy sprayers on their shoulders across the fields, so he wanted to have a supporting device to help his relatives.

During the day, Trung studied for his final exams, and at night, he tinkered with his creations. Many times, he overslept and was late for class, and his teachers scolded him, but because of his passion, he did not give up. After nearly 3 months, the completed model was installed right in his yard.

The system uses simple equipment such as a motorized tractor, cable, pulley, spray arm with attached mist nozzles, iron stakes, pump, and pesticide tank. Just drive 2 stakes at both ends to build the cable system, then pull the cable, connect the water hose and turn on the engine, the spray arm will move along the cable line. The device can operate in many different terrains, is easy to install, and convenient to transport. The product is expected to help farmers avoid having to carry heavy spray tanks or rent expensive equipment.

Trung said that during the testing process, the assembled equipment had to be disassembled many times because it could not be operated due to miscalculation of the weight of the sprayer, the traction motor was weak compared to the boom, and the designed pile took a long time to drive but was not strong. These limitations were recalculated and fixed later.

To create a solid structure for misting operations, Trung designed an iron pile consisting of a main pile and many small legs welded together to facilitate the driving or pulling of the pile. The cable was made from parachute cord or cow-nose rope with durable and soft properties. Because he did not have enough machines, he ran around to rent and ask people to weld and cut some parts of the equipment.

When installed in the field, the cable will be pulled through 2 pulleys pre-installed on the 2 ends of the previously driven stakes. Then attach the misting nozzle to one end of the cable and connect the water hose to the sprayer. Trung explained that when attaching the sprayer to the two cables, one wire will be fixed and the other wire will have a moving bearing to create a perpendicular structure between the cable and the sprayer. At that time, the sprayer will be in a balanced state and parallel to the ground along the entire spray path. Next, connect the battery to the traction motor mounted on the iron stake, and at the same time start the pump that has the suction head connected to the pesticide tank, the pump head connected to the wire leading to the sprayer. Wait for the amount of pesticide sprayed to the nozzles of the sprayer to stabilize, turn on the traction motor switch, the machine will move the sprayer along the cable. When reaching the end point, just turn the switch back to the sprayer to move to the original position to pump again for the second time, or move the stake to spray the next position, starting a new spray.

According to the author, the limitation of this method is that it requires planting stakes and pulling wires for each spraying in each field. However, this system is especially effective in greenhouses because it only needs to be installed once and moved to another area without having to be disassembled as in the field. Trung proposed to overcome this by burying the stakes in advance so that each installation will save time and effort.

With the idea of applying science and technology to support relatives and spread the passion for creativity to the community, Dinh Van Trung's product received an encouragement prize of 20 million VND at the 2023 Science Initiative Contest. The idea was highly appreciated by the Jury, truly in the spirit of "innovation" to find solutions to problems from real life.

Trung shared that the award is very meaningful, helping him satisfy his passion for creativity. "I am very happy to be in Hanoi to meet real scientists and really want to become a scientist," Trung said and hopes to receive support to develop and spread the device throughout the country.

Sharing with VnExpress , Mr. Nguyen Viet Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Nghe An, highly appreciated the creative passion of young people, especially high school students. He said that from knowledge in school, books, newspapers, the internet, especially from real life, many ideas and initiatives have been born to apply in labor, production, and environmental protection, which is worthy of being honored, rewarded and replicated. "The attention of professional agencies, scientists, and businesses to help students perfect their ideas and initiatives and nurture and give wings to their dreams," said Mr. Hung.

The leader of Nghe An Department of Science and Technology shared that after many years of following scientific and technological research and innovation activities, he has high expectations for the young generation. He hopes that the State will have strong policies to promote research activities and create an environment to nurture young scientists.
