Skepticism mixed with trust, what do people in different countries think about AI?

Developing countries and the BRICS bloc are enthusiastically supporting artificial intelligence (AI) technology, but developed countries are skeptical about this technology.

Nowadays, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a new tool that can help people handle previously very complex tasks. Many people, including high-ranking politicians, have also applied AI to increase efficiency, improve labor and shorten working time.

Believers, doubters

According to global accounting firm KPMG, the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) are applying AI in all fields. Notably, half of the population of these countries shows confidence in the great potential that AI brings.

Among the countries mentioned above, 75% of Indians surveyed have absolute faith in this future technology. The rate of AI application in work surveyed in China is up to 75%, while in India it is about 66% and in Brazil it is 50%.

In contrast, developed countries are somewhat skeptical about new technology. 40% of Americans surveyed have a positive assessment of artificial intelligence, but only 24% are willing to use it. Japan and Finland have the most negative rates towards AI. Specifically, these two countries have only 23% of the surveyed people trust AI.

The study was conducted by KPMG in conjunction with the University of Queensland, one of Australia’s leading universities. It surveyed 17,000 people in 17 countries, including the BRICS, the US, Japan, Australia, European countries and others.

The survey included questions related to the use and acceptance of AI in various professional fields, such as Medicine, Finance and HR, as well as in some everyday activities.

Increasing coverage

Artificial Intelligence has become the most talked about technology in the world in recent times. There was even a time when AI was the top search engine on Google. The technology is driven by significant advances in areas such as text-to-image generation, advanced language learning models, and the platforms that create it that can use such technologies in everyday situations.

The survey found that 82% of respondents claimed to have some knowledge of AI. The country with the most awareness of the technology was South Korea (98%), followed by China (96%), Finland (95%) and Singapore (94%). The Netherlands was the country with the least awareness of the technology at 58%.

According to the survey results, industries that require high levels of expertise have very low AI application rates, such as human resource management with 36%. Overall, 67% of the general population feels optimistic about the potential of AI, while only 24% say they oppose the application of this technology in life.

The acceptance and trust in AI – not just in specific work contexts but also in general terms – is opening up a world of opportunities for people to change the way they live and work. However, KPMG’s research also serves as a reminder that users must consider the risks and concerns associated with artificial intelligence, as with any emerging technology.

In fact, many experts have raised alarms on the subject, concerned that developing AI too quickly could lead to a product so successful that – according to some prominent industry figures – things could spiral out of control without proper controls.

Elon Musk, Steve Wozniak, and even Emad Mostaque - CEO of Stability AI, developer of the AI imaging model Stable Diffusion, have all spoken out to call for stopping the development of AI stronger than ChatGPT for security reasons.
