Supporting businesses against ransomware

Tạp chí Doanh NghiệpTạp chí Doanh Nghiệp30/05/2024

DNVN - To combat ransomware, the basic and best solution is to speed up the data recovery process. This is also the solution recommended by many leading organizations such as the US National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Cybersecurity Authority of Singapore, the Hong Kong Association of Bankers, etc.

At Vietnam Security Summit 2024, chaired and organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications and the Department of Information Security on May 30 in Hanoi, Mr. Lin Guanrui - Technical Director of Data Center Solutions and Marketing, Huawei APAC Enterprise Division, gave a speech on the topic "Protecting data infrastructure against ransomware attacks".

In fact, ransomware has hit 66% of global organizations and 93% of data targets in 2023 (according to Sophos and Veeam Report), causing $42 billion in damage in 2024. This number will continue to increase when the frequency of each attack is shortened to only 2 seconds by 2031, according to the Cybersecurity Alliance. To combat ransomware, Mr. Lin Guanrui has proposed the basic and best solution is to speed up the data recovery process. This is also the solution recommended by many leading organizations such as the US Institute of Standards and Technology, the Cybersecurity Authority of Singapore, the Hong Kong Association of Banks, etc.

However, when implementing in practice, many businesses encounter many difficulties due to the increasing amount of data but the recovery speed is getting slower. The three biggest needs of businesses today are: improving the reliability and success of the backup process; increasing the ability to detect ransomware and diversifying data protection tools to suit different workloads.

Huawei has developed a suite of secure storage solutions that enable detection and prevention of ransomware attacks, as well as efficient data recovery capabilities, enhancing data center protection for enterprises. Among them, Huawei MRP - the latest multi-layered anti-ransomware solution - is the industry's first anti-ransomware solution based on the combination of network storage technology with a 2-line defense architecture and 6-layer comprehensive protection.

Huawei MRP builds an in-depth defense system for the pre-, during-, and post-attack stages, strictly following the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Identify-Protect-Detect-Response-Recover (IPDRR) Cybersecurity Framework. The solution has been certified by the international testing organization Tolly Group for 100% detection of ransomware samples through network storage in 21 different attack scenarios.

In Huawei MRP architecture, 02 lines of defense refer to defense on the network side and storage side, 06 layers of protection are also divided into 02 layers of protection on the network side and 04 layers of protection on the storage side. At Vietnam Security Summit 2024, Mr. Lin Guanrui shared about 04 layers of protection on the storage side of enterprise customers.

For storage devices, Huawei MRP uses 4 layers of protection: Detecting ransomware attacks; Immutable backup creates a copy of data, immune to ransomware attacks; Fast, uninterrupted data recovery with reliable performance; Physical network isolation using Air Gap network automatic switching technology.

Huawei MRP has also been proven to be industry-leading in its anti-ransomware effectiveness when applied in real-world business environments. For example, in Hong Kong (China), more than 40 branches of a bank have implemented the solution to comply with strict financial industry requirements, keep data safe from ransomware attacks, increase backup speed by 4 times, and expand storage capacity flexibly according to data growth of 30% per year.
