Vietnamese passport drops one place in early 2025 rankings

The Henley Index ranking of the world's most powerful passports ranked Vietnam's passport 91st, down one place compared to the November 2024 announcement.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Vietnam ranks 91st globally. This is the second consecutive drop in the ranking of the Vietnamese passport since January 2024. In the Henley ranking in the first quarter of last year, the Vietnamese passport ranked 87th. It then dropped 3 places in the third quarter, ranking 90th.

With a ranking of 91, Vietnamese citizens can enter 51 destinations without a visa or only need to apply for an e-visa, a border visa, or an ETA (electronic travel authorization) out of a total of 199 countries and territories. This benefit is similar to the 90th position.

Some destinations that Vietnamese citizens can enter without a visa or only need an e-visa, a border visa include Barbados, Bolivia, Brunei, Burundi, Cambodia, Cape Verde Islands, Chile, Comoro Islands, Cook Islands, Djibouti, Dominica, Guinea Bissau, Madagascar, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Iran, Indonesia, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Panama, Philippines, Suriname, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu.

In Southeast Asia, Singapore continues to hold the top position, possessing the most powerful passport in the world. Its citizens are exempt from visas to 195 countries and territories. Laos is in 93rd place and Myanmar is in 94th place. The remaining countries ranked above Vietnam, ranging from 51st to 89th place.

The five countries with passports at the bottom of the rankings are Pakistan - ranked 103rd, visa-free access to 33 destinations; Yemen (ranked 103rd, 33 destinations); Iraq (ranked 104th, 31 destinations), Syria (ranked 105th, 27 destinations) and Afghanistan (ranked 106th, 26 destinations).

Henley & Partners' ranking draws data from the International Air Transport Association, a large, accurate travel information database published 2-3 times a year. The Henley Passport Index has been ranking passports of countries and territories since 2006.

The Henley & Partners list is one of several rankings compiled by financial institutions to assess the power of global passports. Another prestigious global passport ranking is Arton Capital, which evaluates 193 United Nations member states and six territories: Taiwan, Macau, Hong Kong, Kosovo, Palestine and the Vatican.

According to Arton's Global Passport Ranking 2025, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) holds the top spot.
