Coach Kiatisuk: 'I don't run away after failure'

Gia Lai coach Kiatisuk Senamuang admitted that he is in the worst period of his career, but has just relieved some of the pressure after helping HAGL defeat Hanoi FC 2-0.

"This is the worst period of my career, both as a player and as a coach," Kiatisuk said at a press conference after the 8th round of the 2023-2024 V-League on the afternoon of December 27. "I always determined that as a coach, I must be resilient, not give up, not run away after failure, to continue to motivate the players."

Kiatisuk said he had set a goal of helping HAGL win the V-League when he agreed to return as the team's coach in February 2020. The cancellation of the 2021 tournament due to Covid-19, right when HAGL was at its peak and leading the table, caused much regret, because in the following two seasons, the team declined, finishing sixth in the 2022 season and 10th in the 2023 season. That decline continued into this season, when Kiatisuk and his team drew two and lost five out of the first seven rounds, before the team surprisingly defeated Hanoi FC 2-0 in round 8 today.

At Pleiku Stadium, HAGL entered the match with a fast pace, surprising Hanoi FC. In the 20th minute, A Hoang opened the score in a set piece before Jhon Cley doubled the gap in the 34th minute. HAGL was under pressure for the rest of the match, but the players played with determination, especially goalkeeper Phan Dinh Vu Hai, who made many miraculous saves.

Coach Kiatisuk said the whole team is always eager to win to escape the bottom of the table. The Thai coach considers the victory a worthy achievement for HAGL after tireless efforts to overcome pressure from many sides. In addition, Kiatisuk also thanked the presence and support of new Technical Director Vu Tien Thanh. The former coach of Ho Chi Minh City Club, Saigon FC, has just joined HAGL not long ago and has only worked with Kiatisuk for the past four days.

Kiatisuk said: "Vu Tien Thanh came to HAGL at the invitation of Mr. Duc. Mr. Thanh said I am gentle and rarely scold the players. He is tough and strong, so we share and complement each other very well. In the near future, Mr. Thanh and I will discuss more to find the best solution for the team."

The victory has not helped HAGL escape the bottom of the table as it only has five points, one point behind Ha Tinh and Khanh Hoa. However, Kiatisuk said this is a good sign before the team has more than a month to prepare for the 2023-2024 Night Wolf V-League to temporarily stop to make room for the Vietnamese team to attend the 2023 Asian Cup.
