Joy, excitement and emotion were the feelings of poor households in Da Bac district on the day they received funding to support the construction of Great Unity houses.
As one of the extremely poor households in Giap Dat commune (Da Bac district, Hoa Binh), Ms. Vi Thi Hoa (53 years old, Tay ethnic group) could not hide her happiness on the day she received financial support. Ms. Hoa shared that when she learned that she was on the list of people receiving support for housing construction this time, the whole family was very emotional. “The wooden house was built a long time ago but has now deteriorated a lot. My husband passed away early, my daughters married far away, my son works for hire, now only my mother and I depend on each other to live. Working in the fields all year round is just enough to eat… but I never thought I could build a house,” Ms. Hoa shared.
Also attending the ceremony were two sisters, Mrs. Sa Thi Hoa (71 years old) - Sa Thi Ly (63 years old), residing in Son Phu hamlet, Cao Son commune, Da Bac, who were moved when their names were called to receive financial support. Both cases are in difficult circumstances, belonging to poor households in the locality.
The dilapidated, termite-infested wooden house that was about to collapse every time it rained or was windy had become a nightmare for the two sisters for many years.
Being a poor family living alone, Mrs. Sa Thi Hoa’s life depends almost entirely on the help of relatives, neighbors and the government. The house where Mrs. Hoa lives is now dilapidated, termites have eaten away most of the pillars and is at risk of collapsing at any moment. The cement sheets that she begged for to cover the roof have also deteriorated after many years of protecting her from the rain and sun.
“My husband passed away more than 20 years ago, my daughter is married far away, and I myself have suffered many after-effects from an accident since childhood, so I am almost unable to work. At this age, I only want to have enough to eat. I have never dared to dream of a new house,” Ms. Hoa shared, trembling.
Receiving the financial support, Ms. Hoa was moved: "I don't know what to say other than thank you to the Party, the State, the Front and the benefactors who helped me have a house so I can live the rest of my life in peace."
Mrs. Sa Thi Ly, Mrs. Hoa's younger sister, sat next to her and shared more about her situation. Both sisters had struggled since childhood. When they got married, both sisters' husbands died early, their children got married and went to work far away. All year round, Mrs. Ly and Mrs. Hoa only farmed and raised chickens and pigs. The wooden house had been built temporarily for decades, and they had no capital, so even if they saved up from now until the end of their lives, it would not be enough to build a part of a solid house.
"Having a new house will be a great motivation to help my sister and I improve our lives, escape poverty and suffering," said Ms. Ly.
Joy and excitement are also the feelings of Mr. Trieu Van Son (57 years old, Dao ethnic group, Cao Son commune, Da Bac). The wooden house on the hill that the couple built more than 20 years ago is no longer sturdy. The wish of having a solid house to protect from the rain and sun is now about to come true.
"Having a house gives us peace of mind to grow crops and raise livestock to develop the economy. We can only say thank you to the Party and the State for caring about us, helping us poor people have the motivation to continue to rise up," Mr. Son expressed his determination.
