In the match against the Indian team yesterday (October 12), coach Kim Sang-sik used two different players on the left wing, first Nguyen Phong Hong Duy in the first half, then Khuat Van Khang in the second half. Both of these players failed to complete their tasks.
As for Nguyen Phong Hong Duy, although he has played for the national team for many years, he has never played well in the national team jersey in international tournaments. His physical strength and ability to compete one-on-one are his biggest weaknesses. Meanwhile, at the national team level in international tournaments, players often have to face big, strong opponents, so this weakness of Hong Duy is even easier to exploit.
In addition, the unstable competitive mentality is also another weakness of the player currently playing for Nam Dinh team. Even though Hong Duy is a player with a lot of experience, he still cannot overcome the weakness of weak mentality.
Hong Duy did not perform well in the match against India.
Usually, when under strong pressure, Hong Duy is prone to making mistakes: in the semi-final of the AFF Cup 2020 against Thailand, Hong Duy missed the ball in a very simple situation, creating conditions for Chanathip Songkrasin to score the decisive goal, eliminating the Vietnamese team from the tournament. In the match against Thailand last month, Hong Duy also missed the ball, leading to 1 of 2 goals for the team from the land of the golden pagoda at My Dinh Stadium. Yesterday, the player from HAGL Club still could not reassure experts and fans. He did not defend very well and did not attack very sharply.
Khuat Van Khang, who replaced Hong Duy in the second half, also did not defend well. Khuat Van Khang made a mistake in catching an offside in an attack by the Indian team in the middle of the second half. Luckily, the opposing player did not control the ball well. Otherwise, the Indian player would have faced goalkeeper Nguyen Filip.
Khuat Van Khang also occasionally made unsafe back passes. These passes either lacked power or went to the weaker foot of center back Thanh Chung and goalkeeper Nguyen Filip, making it difficult for Khuat Van Khang's teammates to handle. This was also an area too close to the goal, so the risk of conceding a goal with these back passes was even greater.
Khuat Van Khang also did not play very impressively.
The above errors mainly come from the fact that Khuat Van Khang is not good at playing as a left-back. He also has too many disadvantages for a player playing in this position, especially in terms of physique, leading to poor one-on-one competition ability.
Under coach Troussier, the French coach failed when experimenting with Khuat Van Khang at left-back. Therefore, it is not surprising that yesterday's similar experiment by coach Kim Sang-sik was also unsuccessful.
Coach Kim Sang-sik has two more players capable of playing left back, Phan Tuan Tai and Giap Tuan Duong. Perhaps in the future, Mr. Kim will pay more attention to these players, to help the left wing of the Vietnamese team play better than yesterday.
