By the time of Lunar New Year 2025, many major bridge projects on the North-South Expressway have basically completed the main items, far ahead of schedule compared to the original plan.
Racing with the flood, speeding up the bridge piers in the middle of the river
On the occasion of Lunar New Year 2025, engineer Doan Thai Dai, Executive Director of Long Dai Bridge project (under Trung Chinh Construction and Trading Company Limited) - one of the largest bridges of the North - South expressway project, Bung - Van Ninh section, and hundreds of other workers were happy to return home early to celebrate Tet with their families.
"By mid-January 2025, Long Dai Bridge was basically completed, reaching 99% of the plan, 11 months ahead of schedule compared to the time signed in the original contract and about 2-3 months ahead of the adjusted finish time (April 30, 2025)," said engineer Dai.
Going back in time to the early days of approaching the project, engineer Doan Thai Dai said that the Long Dai bridge with a length of 1,157m had a relatively complicated route with 2 times passing through residential areas (Hien Ninh commune and Xuan Ninh commune, Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province), 2 times passing through National Highway 15, the North-South railway and the Ho Chi Minh road. The route was designed to avoid the project entering the national historical site of the Long Dai Truong Son Martyrs Memorial.
"The complex terrain poses a big challenge in site clearance and compensation. The number of resettled households is not large (about 10 households), but the agreement on compensation prices is prolonged because people want prices higher than the state's regulations.
In order to avoid losing control of the project's progress, Trung Chinh Company quickly "rolled up its sleeves" with the local authorities and functional agencies to mobilize each household and agreed to pay additional costs along with the local land acquisition and clearance costs, supporting people in resettlement, moving assets on the land, and handing over the site to the contractor early," engineer Dai recalled.
Continuing, the commander said: By June 30, 2024, the site clearance work will be completed at the last households. At this time, the contractor's task is to concentrate on accelerating and completing the last 4 spans of the bridge as quickly as possible.
"Trung Chinh Company mobilized about 100 workers with the number of equipment many times higher than the original construction plan so that 3 shifts and 4 teams could "fight the final battle". After 3 consecutive months, the remaining 4 spans were completed, shortening the construction time by half compared to normal", engineer Doan Thai Dai shared.
What is the secret that helps Trung Chinh Company finish the project early? Answering the reporter's question, engineer Dai affirmed: it is a thorough understanding of the terrain and weather characteristics of the project construction area, a clear plan, and detailed calculations of the construction organization plan at each time.
For example, in the Central region, the rainy season usually lasts from mid-August to early December every year. Approaching the project, the contractor plans to bring the lower items (bored piles, pier bases, etc.) above the water level before the flood season; during the rainy season, install a roofing system to construct the cantilever bridge span, Super-T girder; after the rain stops, construct the girder loft.
"The most memorable time was the construction of 5 bridge piers in the middle of Long Dai River. From the start of construction to the 2023 flood season, we only had 8 months to race.
Determined to complete the underwater items of these 5 bridge piers before the flood season, the project achieved the goal of shortening the progress. Instead of carrying out construction sequentially, finishing one pier and then moving the scaffolding and equipment to the next pier, Trung Chinh Company mobilized 4-5 times more equipment and human resources than planned, overcoming drizzle and north wind, organizing 24/7 construction of 5 piers at the same time. Until the flood came, the concrete pouring of pier T7 was completed.
If the optimal solution is not calculated in time, during the flood season, the construction site will be "frozen" and Long Dai bridge will not be able to have its current shape and output," said engineer Doan Thai Dai.
"Carrying" each steel roll to build a bridge across two mountains
Next to the Bung - Van Ninh project, at the North - South expressway project, Van Ninh - Cam Lo section, Truong Son Construction Corporation is also going through a thorny journey to build bridges across seemingly unconquerable terrain.
"The most difficult is the An Ma bridge across An Ma forest, consisting of 11 spans, 77 Super-T girders with the highest pillar 28m, average height 18m," said Lieutenant Colonel Pham Minh Phuong, Director of Truong Son 6 Management Board, adding that the site was handed over in July 2023, but it took 5 months for the contractor to access the construction site because the project was blocked at both ends by two mountains.
Overcoming terrain difficulties, Truong Son Construction Corporation has deployed mass mobilization work, forming a public service road through 3 km of cajuput forest of people in Kim Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province.
On that route, each bundle of steel weighing 10 tons was carried by a tank truck to the construction site. 20km away from the site, the beams were cast in parallel to be pulled into the installation immediately after the column body and base were completed.
"In September 2024, the contractor installed the first girder slabs. Determining that if implemented according to the longitudinal launching method, the implementation time could be extended to 45 days (in theory), and at the fastest it would take up to 30 days to complete a bridge deck, the contractor decided to switch to the horizontal girder launching method, shortening the time by half.
To optimize construction time, after many "brain-weighing" meetings, Truong Son Construction Corporation decided to pay its own expenses, extend the power line 20km, and lower the transformer station right at the bridge abutment area to operate the mixing station.
Synchronously deploying solutions associated with peak competition periods, overcoming harsh weather with prolonged rain, up to now, An Ma bridge has completed pouring concrete for 8/11 spans of the bridge deck; launching girders for 10/11 spans. From the initial time when it seemed impossible to shorten the progress, up to now, the contractor has completely mastered the situation, ready to put the project into operation on April 30, 2025, finishing 5 months ahead of the contract", Lieutenant Colonel Phuong said.
In the construction area, there was the headquarters of the Truong Son Army Headquarters in 1972, so the people were very understanding and sympathetic. During the transportation process, sometimes we broke eucalyptus or cajuput trees, but the people did not care about the benefits, they waved their hands enthusiastically, "Truong Son Army, I will not ask for compensation". At that time, we were even more motivated to quickly complete our work, to soon complete the project so that people could travel smoothly, develop the economy, and improve the quality of life.

Along with An Ma bridge, in the Van Ninh - Cam Lo expressway project, My Duc bridge is also a project that Truong Son Construction Corporation has been rapidly implementing, shortening the time by half compared to the plan.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Pham Minh Phuong, this is not a very large bridge, consisting of only 5 spans, but it is the project that received the latest site clearance.
"On May 25, 2024, 1.5 years after the groundbreaking date, the contractor officially received the site. On June 5, bored pile drilling began.
With the spirit of "only moving forward, not backward", making the most of the handed over land area, the contractor has calculated many solutions: working with the local land acquisition council, Le Ninh farm using the public road to transport the construction of the body and piers; Accepting to advance payment so that the authorities can negotiate with the people to hand over the land early while completing the procedures.
The number of equipment, machinery and human resources has also been doubled to speed up underwater projects before the flood season.
Thanks to that initiative, My Duc Bridge has been basically completed and is considered by the investor to be the project that received the latest site clearance but had the fastest construction time," Lieutenant Colonel Phuong shared.
