The female lead - actress Thuy Linh - hangs from a cable, acting out a bombing scene in "Peach, Pho and Piano" - a film about the resistance war against the French.
Director Phi Tien Son's work became a hot topic after its release on the first day of Lunar New Year (February 10), screened exclusively at the National Cinema Center in Hanoi. After nearly two weeks in theaters, the film's revenue reached over one billion VND despite limited screenings, creating a "ticket hunting" fever among Hanoi audiences.
The film recreates the last day of the 60-day war in Hanoi in late 1946 and early 1947. At this time, most of the military and civilian forces had evacuated, leaving only a few people to fight until the last minute.
The crew initially built a demo using 3D as the filming set, before starting to build the real space. They chose an empty lot in Phuc Yen (Vinh Phuc), built a 120-meter-long street in three months, with a budget of about 5-6 billion VND. The construction team had to build a house, then collapse it, creating an old effect. The crew also mobilized many trucks to carry dirt and rocks, and dumped them on the brick floor.
Artist Vu Viet Hung - in charge of art design - said he paid attention to every little detail. For example, he used many household items, cabinets, beds, clay pots, parallel sentences in the scene where people built fences and ramparts. The combat vehicles and guns were modeled from real-life models, with reference to artifacts from the Vietnam Military History Museum and the National History Museum.
During filming, director Phi Tien Son used many real scenes, combined with some scenes shot on a green screen (which will be added with special effects later). The fire and explosion scenes were performed according to standards, with supervisors, ensuring the safety of the entire crew.
The actors in the film have many action scenes. Initially, the crew wanted to use a stuntman. However, Doan Quoc Dam (playing Dan) noticed that in the falling scenes, the stuntman only performed the falling movements, without acting or expressing, making the character lack "soul", so he asked to do it himself. When filming the scene where the character falls from the tiled roof, his body was scratched, and there were places where he bled, because the tiles had many sharp parts that pierced his body.
Doan Quoc Dam also had some "hot" scenes with Thuy Linh (as Huong). He said that both of them discussed with the director about how to act before each scene, so they did not encounter any difficulties.
The female lead Thuy Linh also has an action scene, when she holds a three-pronged bomb and rushes into an enemy tank at the end of the film, supported by the crew by hanging from a cable.
In addition to the main roles, some extras were also given attention, typically Oraiden Manuel Sabonete (a student from Mozambique, studying abroad at the University of Technology, Hanoi). He said that although he only appeared briefly, he spent five days working on the set. Many scenes, he and other actors had to re-enact many times to meet the requirements.
The film will be shot from late 2022 to early 2023, in harsh weather in the northern mountainous region. The crew often filmed at night, when the temperature dropped sharply. In some daytime scenes, when the weather was hot, they had to wear quilted jackets and sweaters to match the winter war setting.
In addition to behind-the-scenes photos, many viewers also shared some humorous photos of actor Doan Quoc Dam. He said that the photos were taken by the crew's secretary and the makeup team to use as a reference for the scene. While relaxing, he posed playfully and posted them on his personal page.
