Mr. Vi Kien Thanh analyzed at the regular press conference of the first quarter of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the morning of April 11.
Peach, pho and piano could have made a profit of 21 billion VND
Peach, Pho and Piano are special cases, receiving great attention from the press and public opinion when a state-ordered film became a hit at the box office.
For a long time, state-ordered films have been labeled "in storage", theaters do not want to show them because of lack of customers, and even if they do appear, they are quickly withdrawn from theaters.
But after the recent release, Dao, Pho and Piano has earned nearly 21 billion VND in ticket sales, equal to the amount of state capital invested in this film.
Mr. Thanh added that in fact, the film's revenue could double to 42 billion VND if tickets were sold at market prices, then the film would make a profit of 21 billion VND.
But the film is only sold at the price of a State-ordered film, half the price of the tickets that theaters are currently selling for commercial films not ordered by the State.
The Director of the Cinema Department analyzed three reasons why this State-ordered film achieved the commercial success it has seen.
First, according to Mr. Thanh, this is a good movie, good quality and "the ideological content is of course good".
Second, the film was directed well by Phi Tien Son, the actors played their roles well, making the film receive support from the press, media, and online community.
So even though the film didn't have a single penny for advertising or distribution, it still spread widely.
The third reason, according to Mr. Thanh, is that the film was lucky to have a "good landing point".
It was a movie released right during the Tet holiday, people had time to watch movies and at that time, movies about other topics were saturated, making a historical movie become a "dish" that was noticed for the audience to "change the taste".
Mr. Thanh said it is not easy for a State-ordered film to combine all three elements such as Dao, Pho and Piano.
He also emphasized that the film's box office success shows that it's not that young people are not interested in historical films or state-ordered films, but that audiences will watch any good film.
Mr. Thanh said that in addition to showing at local theaters during the film week celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu victory, the film Dao, Pho and Piano will be shown on Vietnam Television to a large audience during the upcoming October 10 anniversary of the capital takeover.
The option of restoring 300 damaged films at Vietnam Feature Film Studio should not be considered.
At the press conference, Mr. Thanh also answered questions about the equitization of Vietnam Feature Film Studio.
He said that the Government Inspectorate is still working on the divestment of Vietnam Feature Film Studio.
"Divestment brings many complicated and difficult issues, and will be implemented according to the conclusion of the Government Inspectorate," Mr. Thanh said.
Regarding the petition of artists at Vietnam Feature Film Studio about 300 damaged films at this studio, Mr. Thanh said that the Vietnam Film Institute confirmed that more than 300 of these films are being stored as "originals" at the Film Institute according to international standards.
More than 300 of these films are also stored by Vietnam Feature Film Studio for exploitation. Currently, more than 300 of these films are damaged and cannot be restored.
He affirmed that "the restoration plan should not be considered, because it is costly and technically difficult while the original is already stored at the Film Institute".
