Việt NamViệt Nam20/08/2024

Every year, from mid-January to April of the lunar calendar, many temples and shrines in the South hold the Ky Yen festival. The festival not only has spiritual significance, praying for favorable weather and wind, but is also a long-standing traditional cultural beauty.

According to the beliefs of Vietnamese people in general, especially the people of the South in particular, there is a custom of worshiping gods. Almost every land has a tutelary god - a person who has contributed to the development and preservation of that land. Therefore, at the beginning of the year, depending on the specific customs, the people in the region organize a worship ceremony (worshiping at the communal house) or also known as the Ky Yen festival.

The audience enjoyed the opera excerpts enthusiastically, filling the whole communal house yard.

However, what makes the Ky Yen festivals special is the festival. The art of Hat Boi is a long-standing traditional art form of the people of the Southwest region. Hat Boi is associated with the belief of the local God and is performed in the Ky Yen Festival. If you want to learn and enjoy the art of Hat Boi at the Ky Yen Festival, please join Vietnam.vn in this program through the photo series "Hat Boi in the Ky Yen Festival in the Southwest region" by author Tran Thanh Sang. Coming to Hat Boi is not only to enjoy entertainment but also to contribute to maintaining and preserving the fine cultural traditions of the nation, so that Hat Boi stage will never be forgotten. Recently, the art of Hat Boi in Vinh Long province has been recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. The photo series was submitted by the author to the Photo and Video Contest "Happy Vietnam - Happy Vietnam", organized by the Ministry of Information and Communications.

Artists are performing an excerpt from an ancient play during the Ky Yen festival at Long Thanh communal house, Vinh Long.

Hat boi on Ky Yen day usually consists of three acts: Khai chau dai boi, hat tuong and ton vuong, hoi chau. The last act is a congratulatory act. The first act is a ritual act such as purification, testing drums and beating the drum three times to open the stage. Hat tuong also usually has three singing acts: the first two acts can be scenes of chaos, loyal people being harmed by traitors, the king being usurped. But the last act requires justice to overcome evil. In the singing acts, there is usually a dignitary of the communal house, or a prestigious person in the community who holds the chau, who represents the gods and the audience, praising and criticizing with drum beats.
