In addition to 15 hectares of rice fields, Ms. Thi Huynh also raises pigs, contributing to the family's economic prosperity.
Having just returned home from visiting the 10-day-old Summer-Autumn rice field, Ms. Thi Huynh quickly drank a glass of water and immediately ran out to check on the pigs raised behind the house. “We are a single parent, so I shoulder all the big and small responsibilities, and gradually I got used to it,” Ms. Huynh explained and told more about her family’s situation.
Accordingly, in 1992, she got married and was given 5 hectares of rice fields by both parents to own. With the fields, the couple focused on farming and raising sows. In their free time, they also worked for hire, casting nets and fishing. Thanks to that, not long after, the couple had enough to eat and save, and bought more land. By 2009, the combined land of the house and the rented land had grown to 15 hectares of rice fields.
Although her family life was peaceful, in 2009, her husband passed away, leaving behind a mother and four children. Many people thought that it would be difficult for her to raise her children properly and for the family economy to continue to develop without her husband's support. However, she still tried to overcome it, step by step helping the business to become more stable.
To gain knowledge and experience in farming, she attended many training courses on rice care and disease prevention techniques. When she discovered that her family's fields had signs of disease, she asked people around her and the commune's agricultural extension officers for timely guidance on prevention, treatment, and care.
“To be honest, at first I didn’t know how to take care of rice, so I was very worried, but through training and guidance from people around me, I gradually accumulated knowledge and experience. Now, when I see my rice is sick or lacking nutrients, I know right away to treat and supplement it,” Ms. Huynh confided.
Since then, over the years, her rice fields have yielded no less than those of her neighbors. Specifically, in the recent winter-spring rice crop, she sowed fragrant rice, and after harvesting more than 900kg/cong, after deducting expenses, she made a profit of about 4 million VND/cong. In addition to farming, Ms. Huynh also raises sows and pigs for meat.
Ms. Huynh said that since 2015, she has raised 2 sows every year, each giving birth to 2 litters per year. She does not sell the piglets but raises them for meat. To gain knowledge in raising pigs, she proactively participated in training courses on biosafety farming techniques, so for many years, although many people around her abandoned their pigsties, she still maintained them.
“To raise pigs effectively, first of all, you must choose quality breeds. During the raising process, you need to vaccinate regularly, clean and disinfect the barn regularly,” Ms. Huynh shared and calculated that after deducting the cost of rice cultivation and pig raising, each year, her family earns about 80 million VND, which is quite good for the locality.
In addition to farming and raising pigs, in her spare time, Ms. Huynh also casts nets, fishes, catches snails, and repairs clothes for hire. Although her income is not much, it contributes significantly to her family's daily expenses. Not to mention, Ms. Huynh also actively takes advantage of her time to participate in meaningful activities in the locality.
Specifically, when the government and organizations launch campaigns to repair bridges, patch roads, plant trees or do social security work, she is always present and contributes. Over the past 10 years, she has donated more than 2 million VND each year, helping the locality carry out movements and activities to develop rural areas.
In recognition of her contributions, the People's Committees at all levels and the district's mass organizations have commended and awarded her certificates of merit for her outstanding achievements in the Campaign "All people unite to build new rural areas and civilized urban areas". Ms. Huynh is also known by many people for raising her children to study properly. Because 2 out of her 3 children have graduated from university and have stable jobs in Ho Chi Minh City.
Mr. Pham Hoang Kham, Chairman of Xa Phien Commune People's Committee, commented: "Although she is a woman and a single parent, Ms. Thi Huynh is very patient and hard-working in production and raising her children to be good people. At the same time, she strictly complies with local laws and emulation movements. This is truly an example of a woman overcoming difficulties for many people to learn from."
