A 73-year-old woman had abdominal pain for a long time. The doctor examined her and discovered that her gallbladder, which was smaller than a goose egg, contained thousands of small stones.
On June 22, Dr. Tran Kien Quyet, Head of the Department of Digestive Surgery, Xanh Pon General Hospital, said that the patient had gallstones causing inflammation and required surgery to remove the stones.
"The number of stones was so great that the surgical team was surprised. They were packed tightly in the gallbladder, less than the size of a goose egg," said Dr. Quyet.

Gallstones are formed mainly from the accumulation of cholesterol due to an imbalance of components in bile such as cholesterol, bilirubin, and calcium salts. When the amount of cholesterol in bile increases too much, exceeding the solubility of bile salts or the amount of bile salts decreases, it leads to the formation of stones. In addition, gallstones are also formed due to the accumulation of bilirubin due to sickle cell anemia, cirrhosis, etc.
Women are at higher risk of gallstones than men. People who are sedentary, sit a lot, are overweight, have diabetes, and are over 60 years old; and those who have a diet high in cholesterol or who are too restrictive are also susceptible to gallstones.
Doctors recommend that when there is sudden pain in the right flank, under the ribs, in the right shoulder or between the shoulder blades, accompanied by nausea and vomiting; sweating, restlessness; fatigue; digestive disorders with high fever over 38 degrees, chills, it is necessary to see a gastroenterologist for early treatment.
