Chewing eggshells because they are “rich in calcium”?
Recently, on social media platforms such as TikTok and Facebook, there has been a trend of eating salted roasted quail eggs without peeling them. Many TikTokers have "caught the trend" by chewing the eggshells, claiming that this is a unique and novel way to attract attention.
A TikTok account named TL posted a video of a group of people sitting and eating a tray of quail eggs. Some people wrapped the eggs in vegetables and ate the shells. When asked, the person said that they were “lacking calcium, so they ate it to supplement.”
Another TikTok account posted a video of eating a plate of more than 30 boiled quail eggs in coconut water, but eating them with the shells. This account also commented: “Eating the egg shells has a delicious, nutty taste. It has calcium content.”
However, health experts warn that this habit can pose many health risks.
Risk of infection and food poisoning
Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Tran Quoc Cuong, deputy head of the clinical nutrition department at Thong Nhat Hospital, said that there is currently no recommendation to eat eggs with their shells for any benefit. Because saying that egg shells are rich in calcium is not appropriate. Maybe it is a form of "view-baiting" by social media accounts.
According to Dr. Cuong, although it is just a trend to attract attention, it can still cause consequences such as eating a lot of eggs with shells, in mild cases it can cause indigestion, gastritis. In severe cases it can cause foreign bodies in the digestive tract and in rare cases it can cause intestinal perforation.
Additionally, health experts say eggshells can contain Salmonella, a common food poisoning bacteria.
This bacteria can enter the eggshell from poultry feces or during improper transportation and storage. When eggshells are consumed that have not been properly handled, the risk of bacterial contamination and food poisoning increases.
Therefore, consumers should peel eggs before eating to ensure food safety. Eating eggshells not only does not provide nutritional benefits but also poses many potential health risks.
Be careful with cheap quail eggs sold on the sidewalks.
Currently, on many streets in Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces, quail eggs are sold everywhere at surprisingly cheap prices, with unknown origins and poor storage conditions. Egg trays placed in the sun, dusty, and not ensuring food hygiene and safety pose many potential risks to consumers' health.
Doctors warn that the protein in eggs is easily decomposed when the eggs are expired or improperly preserved. When the protein decomposes, it can easily cause poisoning with symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
In addition, at this time the eggshell also loses its protective ability, making it easier for bacteria to penetrate inside, increasing the risk of intestinal infections.
Therefore, consumers are advised to buy eggs from reputable sources with quality control and clear expiration dates.
