On April 12, South Korea and the United States launched a large-scale joint air force exercise to enhance readiness to respond to threats in all situations.
According to Yonhap news agency, the two-week annual exercise called Korea Flying Training (KFT) was held at Kunsan Air Base in Gunsan City, 178 km south of Seoul.
About 100 aircraft of 25 different types, including the US F-35B stealth fighter and the South Korean F-35A, are being mobilized for this year's training, the joint statement said. The US Army and Marine Corps will also participate in the exercise.
The training focuses on the coordination of modern fighter aircraft, enhancing precision strike capabilities, training troops in search and rescue and combat situations, and mass parachute training. According to General Charles G. Cameron, Commander of Operations at the US 7th Air Force in Korea, the exercise aims to enhance joint operations and readiness to respond to any situation.
The KFT is one of two large-scale air force exercises that South Korea and the United States hold each year. The KFT usually takes place in the first half of the year, while the other exercise – called Vigilant Defense – is carried out in the second half.
Also related to the exercise, according to Yonhap news agency, the South Korean navy said that South Korea, the US and Japan held a joint naval exercise to improve their ability to coordinate operations.
In a statement, the South Korean Navy stated that the trilateral naval exercise took place in international waters south of Jeju Island on April 11 and 12, with a total of six warships from the three countries participating. The US Navy sent the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) and three Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers to participate in the exercise with two Aegis destroyers from South Korea and Japan.
