Before the 5th match of the 2023/2024 AFC Cup group stage, Hai Phong Club and PSM Makassar both have 6 points, 3 points behind the top team Sabah. Therefore, the two teams are determined to win in the hope of chasing the Malaysian representative.
Hai Phong FC did not hesitate to push up their formation, putting pressure on the home team's half. Meanwhile, PSM Makassar took advantage of the speed of right midfielder Muhammad Daffa Salman. This caused many difficulties for Trieu Viet Hung - the player positioned at left back.

Coach Chu Dinh Nghiem urged his players to confidently hold the ball and launch attacks towards goalkeeper Reza Arya Pratama's goal. The away team's attack was more confident when goalkeeper Nguyen Dinh Trieu showed his solidity in the goal.
Hai Phong's best chance came at the end of the first half. In the 45+1 minute, Luong Hoang Nam passed the ball on the left wing before finishing in the PSM Makassar penalty area. However, the ball went wide of the post.
In the second half, coach Chu Dinh Nghiem sent Luong Xuan Truong onto the field. The former HAGL player helped the away team's attacks become smoother.
In the 74th minute, Xuan Truong skillfully passed the ball to Luong Hoang Nam, who passed the ball to Lucao before the Brazilian striker successfully finished.
However, Hai Phong FC's joy did not last long. Three minutes after the opening goal, Yakob Sayuri executed a perfect free kick, bringing the home team an equalizer.
In the remaining time, both sides tried their best but could not score any more goals. The match ended in a 1-1 draw. With this result, the chances of both teams winning the top spot in the table are not high, because Sabah is likely to win against Hougang United.
