Erling Haaland caused controversy when he made fun of the club's mascot. |
Manchester City have launched an investigation after Haaland was accused of causing Southampton's mascot to suffer a neck injury. According to MEN , the incident occurred before Manchester City's 1-0 win over Southampton at the Etihad Stadium, in October last year.
Haaland taunted a female employee who was playing the role of “Moonbeam,” the Etihad Stadium team’s cute alien mascot, by tapping her on the head. The employee initially thought she had been hit by a ball while taking a photo, but later discovered that Haaland had tapped her on the head twice from behind.
The woman – who started working part-time for Manchester City last summer but has not been named – was taken to hospital for tests the following day and has since made a complaint to Greater Manchester Police about Haaland’s alleged assault.
The woman accused Manchester City of deliberately covering up the incident to protect Haaland: “I left the pitch and was like, ‘What the hell just hit me?’. My colleague said, ‘It was Erling. He hit you in the head from behind.’ I was quite upset and started crying, my head was aching and I thought I was in shock. Then I realised he came from behind, hit me in the head and leaned on it.”
After “vomiting and suffering from pain in her neck and head”, she was encouraged by a Manchester City first-team doctor to go to hospital the following day. “I asked if anyone had spoken to Haaland, and he said, ‘No, they don’t want to distract him’,” she said.
“I feel insulted because I am the one who was injured, but I am the one who is being asked all these questions. I believe Haaland would apologize if they gave him the chance. But they just want to sweep this under the rug,” she added.
However, Manchester City's subsequent investigation concluded that Haaland did not cause the girl any harm. CCTV footage only showed the Norwegian touching the mascot lightly. Greater Manchester Police agreed with this conclusion and informed the victim that Haaland did not act with malicious intent.
A Manchester City spokesperson said: “We have carried out a full investigation and found there is no evidence to suggest the woman suffered any injuries as alleged. We are also aware of a complaint made to Greater Manchester Police, but they have not taken any further action.”
