By a vote of 221-212, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives approved an investigation into suspicions that Mr. Biden and his family profited illegally from decisions he participated in as Vice President under the administration of President Barack Obama (2009-2017).
Responding to the decision, the White House said the investigation lacked solid evidence and considered it a political ploy to smear President Biden's reputation ahead of the 2024 election.
According to observers, efforts to remove Mr. Biden from office are likely to fail because impeachment requires the unanimous consent of both houses. Therefore, even if the House votes to impeach the president, the Democratic-controlled Senate, which supports Mr. Biden, will not let that happen.
Previously, Mr. Trump was the first president in US history to be impeached twice and is currently preparing to face four criminal trials.
