On March 15, US President Donald Trump directed the military to launch a large-scale military campaign against Houthi forces in Yemen with the goal of preventing Houthi sabotage of maritime activities in the Red Sea.

Smoke rises from the capital Sanaa on March 15 after the US announced an attack on an area controlled by Houthi forces.

At least 13 civilians were killed and nine others injured in US strikes on Yemen's capital Sanaa on March 15, according to Yemen's Health Ministry.

A resident named Abdullah Yahia in the capital said a building was bombarded and several explosions occurred, causing the surrounding area to shake as if it had just experienced an earthquake.

The Houthis called the US attacks "war crimes" and vowed to respond, saying the scope of the attacks extended to the northern province of Saada.

Fighter jets from the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier are in the Red Sea participating in the opening attack, according to Reuters today, March 16, citing US officials.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM), which manages US forces in the Middle East, described the March 15 attack as marking the opening of a large-scale military campaign across Yemen.

A US official said the operation could last days or even weeks.

The Houthis are an armed movement that has controlled much of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, for a decade. Since November 2023, they have carried out more than 100 attacks on ships in the Red Sea in support of Palestinians in the conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip.

On March 11, the Houthis announced that they would attack Israeli ships passing through the Red Sea and Arabian Sea, the Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden again, after a period of silence since January due to the ceasefire in Gaza.

The US military move in the Middle East also comes as the White House increases pressure on sanctions against Iran and seeks to bring the country back to the negotiating table over its nuclear program.

President Trump also warned Iran to immediately stop its military support for the Houthis. The US leader said that if Iran threatened the US, "the United States will hold Iran fully accountable."
