Kien Giang Mirabel Ting Ern Hui birdied the final hole to set a -6 championship mark at the women's division of the National Amateur Golf Open Championship.

This year, the Vietnam Golf Association chose the par-72 course at Vinpearl Golf Phu Quoc to host the Vietnam Amateur Open (VAO) - the pinnacle event in the amateur competition system. The competition will take place from July 13 to 16, with men competing in four rounds of stroke play and women competing in three rounds.

On the penultimate day of July 15, the men started from hole 1, the women from hole 10, and the cup was decided. Hui birdied hole 9 to keep the round score at even par. Although "breaking even" in this match, the Malaysian golfer maintained the tournament score of -6 and won the women's championship with an eight-stroke gap over runner-up Doan Xuan Khue Minh.

On the opening day, Khue Minh took the lead, achieving even par, Hui was second with a score of +1. However, in the second round, Hui usurped Khue Minh's position - jumping to -6 while the Vietnamese representative -2. Hui changed positions and impressively reversed scores thanks to a 66 stroke, thereby setting a round record for both genders at this Vietnam Amateur Open (VAO). And when the men's and women's tables finished the third round, only Hui maintained a negative score.

Hui is currently ranked 58th in the world amateur golf rankings, having won 5&4 against Khue Minh in the team hole match at the 31st SEA Games, at Dam Vac Stadium in May 2022.

While the VAO 2023 women's bracket ended with a championship score of -6, the top spot in the men's bracket was at a positive level. After round 2, Vietnam's number one amateur Nguyen Anh Minh led at -3 with a two-stroke advantage. But at the end of round 3, Anh Minh dropped to +1 and stood at T1, next to Thai player Arsit Areephun and Malcom Malcolm Ting Siong Hung from Malaysia.

Yesterday, Areephun hit 74 strokes, Hung hit 73 strokes but both were still in the lead position because Anh Minh "lost his fire", showing through 76 strokes with a score of only one birdie and five bogeys. Meanwhile, the owner of the SEA Games 32 gold medal Le Khanh Hung "broke down" after 18 holes with 83 strokes, causing the tournament score to go from +2 to +13. However, Khanh Hung still ranked T10. The men's cup competition is expected to end on the afternoon of July 16.

VAO 2023 started with 65 male and 26 female competitors. The organizers determined the cut-off points after two rounds, at +43 for men, +42 for women. With that limit, 51 men and 20 women qualified to continue.
