The Minister of Education and Training said that Mathematics education needs to be reformed to help students not be afraid of Mathematics and feel the need to learn this subject.

Speaking at the 10th National Mathematics Conference on August 8, Minister Nguyen Kim Son affirmed that Mathematics and Mathematics education are important components of education.

During the difficult years of the country, the conditions for education were limited, but Vietnamese education, from general education to basic science, still achieved a fairly good quality on the world map. According to Mr. Son, an important part was thanks to the contributions of teachers and mathematicians.

Up to now, education has been moving towards comprehensiveness. To improve, Mr. Son believes that many factors are needed, but the role of Mathematics is still an extremely important and long-term pillar.

In the context of the education sector implementing the goal of fundamental and comprehensive innovation, shifting from an education that focuses on equipping knowledge to one that focuses on human development, Mr. Son emphasized that Mathematics and Mathematics education "need a renewal".

"Mathematics needs to actively innovate in the direction of developing learners' thinking, guiding students to use mathematical thinking to solve life problems, solve arising problems to develop thinking," said Mr. Son.

The Minister of Education and Training assessed that up to now, Mathematics education in daily life is still doing well but must do better.

"How can we make students not be afraid of Math but love this subject, how can we make students feel that Math is useful for them and that they need to learn it?" Mr. Son shared.

Innovation in teaching and learning Mathematics has been of interest for many years. On the sidelines of the conference "Research, teaching and application of Mathematics" in Ho Chi Minh City on the afternoon of August 3, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Huu Du, former President of the Vietnam Mathematical Association, shared that many students are afraid of Mathematics, especially at the university level.

The reason is that Math knowledge is too difficult and academic, while teachers have not inspired learners, causing students to often think that learning Math formulas is useless and does not need them in life. While in reality, Math is close, helping logical thinking and systematic thinking better.

In order for Math to promote its beauty and role, Mr. Du believes that teachers must have effective ways of teaching, find more interesting methods, and incorporate examples from real life into their lessons.

"Teachers should not teach by giving long formulas, then changing them, and then giving students tricky test questions. This makes mathematics more and more distant from reality," said Mr. Du.

This expert also believes that the multiple choice math test format in the high school graduation exam needs to be changed. "This test format is killing math," he said.

The National Mathematics Conference is the largest activity of the Vietnamese Mathematics community, held every 5 years. This is a forum for researchers, applicators and educators of Mathematics to present scientific achievements and discuss current and urgent issues for the development of Mathematics in the country.

This year, the conference was held in Da Nang, attracting the participation of nearly 1,000 mathematicians from home and abroad.

At the conference, Minister Nguyen Kim Son thanked the mathematicians. According to the Minister, in the transition period of higher education and the phase of implementing autonomy, basic science faces many great challenges, especially in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

However, scientists have overcome difficulties, maintaining academics and developing international publications, thereby increasingly affirming the position of Vietnamese higher education on the world map. He said that in the coming time, the Ministry of Education and Training will have policy recommendations to develop basic science fields, using basic science as a foundation for other fields, especially for educational science.
