On the afternoon of July 21, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development organized an online forum connecting the production, processing and export of Vietnamese brackish water shrimp.

According to the Department of Fisheries, Vietnam's shrimp industry exports to about 100 countries, with major markets (China, the US, South Korea, Japan and Europe). Vietnam's shrimp ranks second in the world in terms of export value, accounting for 13% of the total global shrimp export value. On average, each year in our country, shrimp contributes about 45% of the total seafood export value, equivalent to 4 billion USD. In the first 6 months of this year, the shrimp industry had more than 650,000 hectares of farming area, up 6.4% over the same period; output was estimated at 467,000 tons, up 4% over the same period; shrimp export turnover reached 1.56 billion USD, accounting for 38% of the total seafood export turnover.

In order for the shrimp export industry to reach more than 4.3 billion USD in 2023, Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Quality, Processing and Market Development, suggested that farmers should not harvest massively and cooperate with businesses to reduce intermediary costs, feed, and input materials. According to Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, shrimp inventories in the world are decreasing. Taking advantage of this opportunity, Vietnamese shrimp needs to boost exports. Vietnam's trade offices in other countries need to step up promotion and advertising of the image of Vietnamese shrimp.

On the same day, in Bac Lieu, Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee coordinated with Tuoi Tre Newspaper to organize a Workshop on Environmental Solutions for Sustainable Development of the Shrimp Industry.

Bac Lieu is focusing on implementing agricultural development solutions, focusing on high-tech agriculture, to soon turn the province into the center of the national shrimp industry, with 25 companies and over 800 households participating, with a total area of over 4,600 hectares and 5 enterprises being granted high-tech agricultural enterprise certificates. Bac Lieu Provincial People's Committee said that the locality is applying for approval to implement the project of blocking the Ca Mau canal, storing fresh water in the Ca Mau - Bac Lieu canal, and taking fresh water from Phung Hiep canal to dilute for shrimp farming. Because the weather is too hot, the shrimp do not grow; the water is too salty, the shrimp are susceptible to disease.

Speaking online, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan shared that if the shrimp industry wants to develop sustainably, first of all, people's thinking and awareness must be changed. When people agree, support and coordinate with state management agencies, businesses and scientists, the shrimp industry will develop sustainably and be associated with environmental protection.

Localities need to study the establishment of a shrimp industry association in the Mekong Delta with the participation of four parties (farmers, government, scientists and businesses) to support, share difficulties and develop together.
