Speaking during a phone call on June 3, President Kais Saied said: "Illegal immigration has become a burning issue affecting relations between countries in the north and south of the Mediterranean basin."
The Tunisian leader suggested holding an international conference with the participation of all countries involved in this issue.
The two Presidents also discussed a number of other issues of mutual concern such as bilateral cooperation, Tunisia's economic and financial difficulties, and Tunis' negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Located in the central Mediterranean, Tunisia is one of the most popular transit points for illegal migrants entering Europe.
The number of migrants trying to reach Italy via Tunisia is increasing, despite strict measures against illegal immigration by the country's authorities.
In a report released on June 1 by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Africa “contributes” to 7 countries in the list of 10 most “forgotten” migration crises, including Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Burundi, Mali, Cameroon and Ethiopia.
NRC is an NGO that protects the rights of people affected by displacement.
