On January 23, the USD price on the free market skyrocketed and exceeded 25,000 VND for the first time since October 2022.
Foreign currency purchasing points in the market have sharply increased the USD buying and selling price by nearly 200 VND compared to the weekend, to 24,980 - 25,080 VND per USD.
Compared to the beginning of the month, each black market USD increased by 260 VND for buying and 300 VND for selling, equivalent to an increase of 1 - 1.2%. However, compared to the record price set in October 2022, the current USD price on the black market is still about 250 VND lower per USD.
Shop owners explained that the increase in USD prices was due to higher demand. The owner of a large gold shop on Le Loi Street, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City said that in the past few days, information has been spreading in the market about businesses approaching the maturity date for foreign currency loans, so many people are rushing to buy USD because they are afraid of USD shortage.
The free USD price has increased sharply recently and is creating a gap compared to the bank exchange rate. The central exchange rate this morning was listed by the State Bank at 24,031 VND/USD, down 6 VND. With the current 5% band, the USD price at commercial banks is allowed to fluctuate from 22,829 VND to 25,232 VND. The USD price at banks is adjusted down 15 - 40 VND each way.
Major banks listed the buying and selling rates at 24,335 - 24,705 VND/USD (buy - sell), up 5 VND each way compared to before. At joint stock banks, the price was 24,405 - 24,710 VND/USD.
