Experts predict that in the second quarter of 2025, China may increase purchases when Vietnam enters its main harvest season, helping domestic pepper prices recover. Conversely, the US may adjust its import pace due to large inventories remaining from 2024.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), key pepper growing areas across the country have entered the 2025 harvest season, but progress has been slow due to weather impacts. The peak harvest is expected to be in late March or early April 2025. Meanwhile, import demand from the US, EU and China remains quite sluggish, partly due to the exhausted supply from the previous crop and the arrival of the new crop later than expected.

Although the market is in the adjustment phase, pepper export prices tend to increase, bringing a positive signal to farmers. However, the stockpiling strategy needs to be carefully calculated to limit risks from global market fluctuations.

According to experts, 2024 has seen US importers increase their stockpiling due to concerns about high prices, causing actual purchases to increase by 30-40%, although demand is forecast to increase by only 5%. This helps farmers and pepper stockpilers benefit from good prices right from the start of the season.

However, many exporters have encountered difficulties due to long-distance sales contracts with US customers, leading to losses when prices increase sharply at the time of delivery. The lesson from this situation shows the importance of linking supply chains and improving price forecasting capabilities.

According to the US International Trade Commission (USITC), the US is still the world's largest pepper importer with nearly 98,000 tons last year, of which Vietnam accounted for more than 77% of total imports.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), pepper prices have increased since the beginning of the year in most major export markets, of which, the export price of white pepper from Indonesia increased the most, up 12.8%, the export price of black pepper from this market also increased by 6.9%; the export price of pepper from Brazil increased by 7.5%; the export price of black pepper and white pepper from Malaysia increased by 5.9% and 8.4% respectively.
