Steel prices on the exchange

Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for June 2025 delivery rose 13 yuan to 3,425 yuan/t.

Dalian iron ore futures rose for a third straight session to their highest in nearly two months amid expectations of more economic stimulus measures and seasonal replenishments from steelmakers in top consumer China.

The most-traded January iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 0.94 percent to 809 yuan ($110.96) a tonne.

Earlier in the session, the contract hit its highest since Oct. 8 at 813.5 yuan a tonne.

Benchmark January iron ore on the Singapore Exchange was unchanged at $104.60 a tonne, after hitting its highest since Nov. 8 at $105.20 a tonne.

Market participants are awaiting signals on the possibility of more stimulus measures from closely watched meetings between Beijing's top leaders, analysts said.

“The upcoming Central Economic Work Conference in December will shape the policy outlook for 2025. Improving steel mill margins bode well for iron ore demand, although property indicators have yet to show significant improvement,” ANZ analysts said in a note.

Building stockpiles from steel mills are also supporting prices of key steelmaking raw materials, analysts at Nanhua Futures said in a note.

Steel production may pick up seasonally this winter, with Chinese steelmakers likely to boost steel exports ahead of potential tariffs and rising global trade tensions.

Other steelmaking raw materials on the DCE fell, with coking coal and coke down 0.69% and 0.85% respectively.

Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange rose. Rebar rose 0.51%, hot-rolled coil rose 0.86%, wire rod rose 0.47% while stainless steel was unchanged.
