Rice prices drop, farmers face difficulties!

In recent days, farmers in the eastern region of Tien Giang province have entered the peak harvest period of the late winter-spring rice crop. However, rice prices have not shown signs of recovery, causing farmers to lose profits. In Go Cong City, many farmers have entered the late winter-spring rice harvest period. This winter-spring crop, 5 hectares of rice land of Ms. Nguyen Thi Hue's family (Thanh Nhut Hamlet, Binh Xuan Commune) is sown with Nang Hoa 9 variety.

Mr. Muoi Ba's rice field has just been harvested.
Mr. Muoi Ba's rice field has just been harvested.

According to Ms. Hue, this crop, input costs increased, but the selling price of rice decreased sharply, so there was not much profit. "Traders bought Nang Hoa 9 rice at only 6,800 VND/kg, almost the same as a few years ago. In fact, each hectare of land my family lost about 2 million VND compared to the crop of the last 3 years. If the rice had a good price, farmers would not suffer much," Ms. Hue complained.

In Go Cong Tay district, farmers have also started harvesting the winter-spring rice crop in recent days. The reason is that many households in the district did not cut the autumn-winter rice crop, leading to the winter-spring rice crop being sown later than in previous years.

When we arrived, Mr. Vuong Van Muoi Ba (Phu Quoi Hamlet, Yen Luong Commune, Go Cong Tay District) had just finished harvesting 4 hectares of Dai Thom 8 rice. According to Mr. Vuong, this crop's rice yield is estimated to reach over 8 tons/ha. However, his family could not be happy because the price of rice had dropped sharply.

Mr. Muoi Ba shared: “Dai Thom 8 rice is currently priced at only 6,400 VND/kg, about 600 VND/kg lower than after Tet and about 1,700 VND/kg lower than last winter-spring crop. This crop, each hectare of rice is sold for about 5 million VND, my family will surely make a profit of about 2.5 million VND/hectare. Compared to last year, each hectare of rice lost about 2 million VND in profit.”

Mr. Vo Minh Luan, Director of Phu Quoi Agricultural - Trade - Service Cooperative (Yen Luong Commune) said that up to now, the cooperative members have almost finished harvesting the late winter-spring rice crop. This rice crop has a good yield, but the price of rice has decreased sharply compared to previous crops. Therefore, the profits of rice farmers have decreased significantly.

In Binh Tan commune, Go Cong Tay district, this winter-spring crop, 6 hectares of rice fields of Mr. Nguyen Van Hung's family were sown with Dai Thom 8 rice variety. Mr. Hung shared: "This crop, the rice yield reached nearly 7.5 tons/ha, not as much as last winter-spring crop. The reason is that when the rice was in the tillering stage, there was too much water in the field so the rice did not bloom. Traders bought the rice at 6,500 VND/kg, much lower than last year. Therefore, this crop did not bring much profit."

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang, Director of Hoa Thanh General Agricultural Cooperative (Binh Tan Commune), currently in the commune, the price of Dai Thom 8 and Nang Hoa 9 rice is between 6,600 - 6,700 VND/kg. In recent days, members of the cooperative have entered the peak rice harvest period, with an average yield of 7.5 - 8.5 tons/ha. With this rice price and yield, on average, farmers can sell each hectare of land for about 5 million VND, with a profit of 2 - 3 million VND/hectare.

"If sowing and planting according to the cultivation process reduces rice seeds and fertilizers, leading to lower input costs, farmers can increase profits," added Mr. Nguyen Thanh Quang.

According to Mr. Huynh Van Luong, Director of Binh Nhi Rural Agricultural Service Cooperative (Binh Nhi Commune, Go Cong Tay District), in recent days, members of the Cooperative have entered the harvest of the winter-spring rice crop and are preparing to finish, with an average yield of 7 - 8 tons/ha.

Mr. Luong added: “Farmers sell rice at prices ranging from 6,800 - 7,000 VND/kg for varieties such as Dai Thom 8, Nang Hoa 9... This winter-spring crop, the cooperative continues to cooperate with Vinh Hien Company Limited to implement the Large Field model with an area of several dozen hectares. At the same time, implement production linkage according to Resolution 07 of the Provincial People's Council with an area of more than 30 hectares. When participating in the linkage, members sell rice at a higher price than the market by 100 - 200 VND/kg”.

In fact, besides the decrease in rice prices, the current rice consumption situation is still not optimistic. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Tung, a trader specializing in purchasing rice in Go Cong Tay district, in recent days, his milling facility has focused on purchasing winter-spring rice to dry and wait for milling. Mr. Tung shared: “After milling, the rice will be sold to traders in Go Cong city for consumption. However, since the autumn-winter crop, rice milling has been very slow, due to the slow rice consumption situation.”
