In an effort to address the severe labor shortage affecting the natural rubber industry, China has launched a mobile rubber tapping robot, marking a major step forward in agricultural automation.
Jointly developed by the Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (CATAS) and Beijing-based technology company Automotive Walking Technology, the self-navigating robot will be tested at rubber plantations in southern China's Hainan province during the upcoming harvesting season in April.
In a demonstration video, the robot can be seen approaching a rubber tree, then stopping with precision before extending its robotic arm to make a precise cut into the tree trunk.
China's natural rubber industry, which plays a vital role in tire production and industrial supplies, is facing a severe labor shortage due to harsh working conditions, night shifts and high rates of occupational diseases.
The robot is equipped with a multi-degree-of-freedom robotic arm and a crawler-based movement system, integrating advanced AI technologies to adapt to complex terrain and make precise cuts. The robot's positioning system combines laser radar and data fusion algorithms from multiple sensors, helping to determine the exact location in plantations.
In addition, machine vision technology helps determine the depth of the bark and the cutting angle, achieving a harvesting efficiency equivalent to 80% of manual labor, while ensuring the corresponding latex quality. This rubber tapping robot can tap 100 to 120 trees per hour, using a lithium battery that allows for continuous operation of more than 8 hours.
