France and the European Union have just pledged tens of millions of euros to invest in the project to build the West Sea dyke and anti-erosion embankment in Ca Mau.

The People's Committee of Ca Mau province and the working delegation of the French Ambassador and the Ambassador of the European Union (EU) officially launched the "Project to build the Western sea dyke and embankment to prevent landslides in key coastal areas" on the afternoon of December 7.

The full name of the project is "Construction of the West sea dyke from Cai Doi Vam to Kenh Nam and embankment to prevent coastal erosion from Ong Doc river estuary to Bay Hap estuary".

The project aims to apply structural and non-structural solutions based on scientific research and naturalistic approaches.

Thereby preventing coastal erosion, restoring mangrove ecosystems, and at the same time improving the coastal management capacity of local authorities; supporting communities in responding to climate change.

The new project is expected by Ca Mau province to continue to improve the effectiveness of coastal protection, making an important contribution to the province's sustainable development strategy.

This is the result of cooperation between the People's Committee of Ca Mau province, the EU and the French Development Agency (AFD). The total cost of the project includes 19.17 million euros in loans from AFD for infrastructure construction, 3.76 million euros in non-refundable aid from the EU through the Water and Natural Resources Management Fund (WARM) for technical assistance and 8.99 million euros in counterpart funds from the local budget.

According to statistics, from 2011 to 2023, coastal erosion has destroyed about 6,200 hectares of land and protective forests in Ca Mau. Thousands of households have had to relocate due to collapsed houses.

Landslides have caused serious damage to infrastructure such as culverts, sea dykes, roads, embankments, destroyed many areas of mangrove forests and shrimp ponds, and threatened residential and tourist areas.

In recent years, thanks to support from central ministries, branches and international organizations, Ca Mau province has completed 78km of coastal protection embankments with a total cost of VND 2,779 billion.

Currently, Ca Mau province is coordinating to build an additional 25.6km of embankment with a cost of VND1,041 billion (including 18km on the West coast with VND501 billion and 7.6km on the East coast with VND540 billion).

The embankment projects have shown remarkable effectiveness in reducing waves, preventing landslides, building up beaches and restoring nearly 1,000 hectares of protective forest. At the same time, the embankment construction also helps improve aesthetics and stabilize the order of riverside housing construction in accordance with the situation of climate change.
