TPO - Many students and international students believe that after taking exams and even getting a foreign language proficiency certificate, they still need to continuously cultivate and improve their skills. English is not difficult, students just need to invest time and effort, and have an environment to practice.
Depends on the learner's effort
Le Vu Anh Thu, a former student of La Trobe University (Australia), shared that since she was a child, she was lucky to have her mother take her to Singapore and Thailand to play, learn and observe. In particular, when she went to Thailand, her mother showed her many young foreigners aged 13-14 who, although not good at English, still traveled around the world. She realized that learning English does not require being good, just being confident is enough to communicate well.
When I was in high school, before I went to study abroad, my grandfather showed me how to learn a foreign language: I had to read stories, watch movies in English, and especially listen to news and podcasts in English. That way, I really knew what words and phrases people often use.
Nguyen Ngoc Quynh, currently studying at Drexel University in Philadelphia (USA), believes that people and families send their children to learn English because they realize the importance of English and gradually learning it becomes a trend.
According to Ngoc Quynh, the reason she got good test scores and used English for studying and living abroad was not because of the exam preparation at the center, but because since she was a child she liked watching videos on YouTube and learned a lot through passive channels.
On the other hand, Quynh also often reads stories in English to improve her vocabulary and how to use words in sentences.
Luong Minh Khue, a former student in the US and Poland, said that each person needs to clearly know their goals when studying in order to make an effort to acquire knowledge. Maybe at the beginning of studying, the goal is to practice for the exam, but after finishing the exam, they need to continuously practice to improve their skills.
“In my opinion, learning English is not difficult, as long as we really invest time and effort. However, the effort depends largely on the learner. If the learner does not have a clear goal and does not love English, it will be difficult to master the language,” Khue said.
Minh Khue also believes that the ultimate goal of a certificate is not only the score but also the assessment of the ability to use that language. Currently, the IELTS exam alone has a very specific method of taking the test and is not applicable in practice when studying at university, both domestically and internationally. The vocabulary or structures that are considered "scoring" points and are widely disseminated on IELTS information sources are not highly valued when studying at higher levels.
“At the undergraduate and graduate levels, what students and researchers need is thinking, knowledge and reasoning. IELTS preparation can help to some extent, but the way of learning that many places in Vietnam are currently applying does not serve practical applications,” Khue said.
According to this international student, immersing children in an English environment is a lifelong task. If children love English, they can find and create their own environment. In reality, not every family has the financial means to invest in sending their children to study at centers with high tuition fees with foreign teachers.
However, there are many sources of information and materials that parents can provide to their children, but they need to be screened to be age-appropriate. It is still important to emphasize that learners need to be proactive in interacting with the materials.
It is necessary to introduce English as a second language in schools.
Mr. Nguyen Nhat Hung, co-founder & CEO of SocioLogic Debate and Critical Thinking Company Limited, said that making English the second language in schools is a very practical goal.
Because according to Mr. Hung, firstly, English will be implemented systematically in the education system. Curriculums and learning materials will be carefully and thoughtfully developed. Teachers, especially young and dynamic teachers, will have many recruitment opportunities to implement and integrate into the education system from primary to high school, helping to rejuvenate resources and promote change, students' access to language, especially in terms of culture when many young teachers have had time to work in English-speaking countries.
This ensures that all students, regardless of economic or geographical conditions, have equal opportunities to learn and practice foreign languages from the very first years of school.
Second, English will not only be a subject that students need to learn to get points and pass the subject, but will become a tool to access other subjects, international resources and learning materials. When exposure to English becomes a necessity, going to school is necessary to understand the lectures, students will gradually build the habit of using English in the most natural way.
Students will no longer have much difficulty translating a word or a sentence from Vietnamese to English, but will understand the language very naturally like a native speaker. This is a strength that only the policy of making English the second official language in schools can promote.
Children should learn English in the most natural way.
"When sending their children to learn a foreign language, parents need to be realistic in their expectations, not put pressure on them, and try to help their children absorb and develop naturally, and develop a love for it," said Luong Minh Khue, a former international student in the US and Poland.
