Highlight Germany escapes defeat to Switzerland thanks to injury-time goal
The Germans were in control of the game but struggled to score against a tight Swiss defence. In the 90+2 minute, striker Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench and scored a powerful header to help the "tanks" avoid a disappointing defeat.
"The final period of the game is when we really need Fullkrug's talent, I am thinking about starting him in the starting line-up in the round of 16.
However, he did a great job when he came off the bench. This really needs to be carefully considered," said German coach Nagelsmann.
The German team's attack is considered to lack sharpness when only Kai Havertz is chosen to play as a striker. Fullkrug came on for Jamal Musiala in the 76th minute, adding strength to the "tanks"' attacks and it is very likely that this striker will be given a starting position by coach Nagelsmann from the round of 16.
"It was a great goal, that header was not easy. Fuellkrug has another week to show what he can do in training, then we will see who our opponents are in the last 16 and prepare for that game.
We have two days to prepare, maybe the opponent is not very happy about this. The German team is waiting for the opponent in the round of 16 and is determined to win," said coach Julian Nagelsmann.
Germany top Group A with seven points, followed by Switzerland with five points and Hungary in third with three points, while Scotland are bottom of the group with just one point.
Germany will find out their last-16 opponents on June 26 when England take on Slovenia and Denmark take on Serbia to complete Group C. The runners-up in Group C will face hosts Germany in the Euro 2024 round of 16 at Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund on June 29.
