On August 30, German police said that a knife attack occurred on a bus, injuring five people. The perpetrator, a 32-year-old woman, was arrested shortly afterwards.
The incident occurred in the town of Siegen, western Germany. According to the police, there is no indication that this was a terrorist attack. Three of the five victims are in critical condition, one is seriously injured and the fifth has only minor injuries.
Germany was shocked by a knife attack a week ago that left three people dead and eight injured in the western city of Solingen. The suspect, a 26-year-old Syrian man who had previously been deported to Bulgaria, was identified as a suspect, sparking a debate about Germany's immigration and asylum policies. On 27 August, police also shot dead a man suspected of attacking passersby with a knife in the town of Moers near Solingen.
The attacks prompted Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government to announce new restrictions on carrying knives at public gatherings and long-distance transport, as well as curbs on welfare benefits for some illegal migrants.
