(PLVN) - With the advantage of attractive natural scenery and relatively good facilities at tourist destinations, the MICE tourism market (tourism combined with conferences, seminars, exhibitions, and events) in Vietnam is currently developing rapidly. Vietnam is making efforts to position its brand and create connections to become a leading MICE tourism center.

Tourism trends with great development potential

MICE tourism is becoming the “golden goose” in Vietnam. Since the beginning of the year, the MICE tourism trend has grown rapidly. According to estimates from a number of businesses, travel agencies, and accommodation establishments, MICE tourists in the domestic market account for an average of 15-20% of total visitors and up to 60% at some large units during peak months. European MICE tourists account for about 20% and are high-end visitors, spending 700-1,000 USD/day; Asian visitors spend more than 400 USD/day.

In Binh Thuan, in just the first 6 months of the year, the tourism industry here organized more than 132 conferences and seminars attracting over 30,700 visitors. Meanwhile, in Ho Chi Minh City, in early 2024, it was honored to receive the award for Asia's Leading MICE Destination for the fourth consecutive time at the 2023 World MICE Tourism Awards held in Germany.

Not only attracting domestic tourists, MICE tourism in Vietnam is also a destination for international visitors. At the end of August, a group of about 4,500 people from an Indian billionaire's pharmaceutical company came to Vietnam, with a series of expensive team building, resort and entertainment activities, bringing in large revenue for the tourism industry.

In the near future, Nha Trang plans to welcome 150 travel agents from Kazakhstan and CIS countries (also known as CIS countries) to attend a tourism conference, as well as visit and survey destinations in Nha Trang (Khanh Hoa province) in early October 2024.

In fact, MICE tourism is being actively invested in and developed by many countries. Most of these tours are organized by companies and corporations with a large number of participants. MICE tourists are mostly in the high-end segment, have stable incomes, and tend to spend a lot on their trips. In particular, currently, conference and award tourism in Vietnam is attracting large markets in the world such as India, Europe, Korea, China, etc. Therefore, experts assess MICE tourism as a "land" rich in potential, bringing high profits, helping the Vietnamese tourism industry develop sustainably. At the recent "Vietnam - Destination of MICE Tourism" Forum, Mr. Vu The Binh - Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association stated that for many years, MICE tourism has been considered a type and specialized tourism product of important significance in the Vietnam Tourism Development Strategy.

Vietnam has great advantages to do MICE tourism.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Minh, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Department of Tourism, said that currently, MICE tourism is considered a strength of the capital's tourism industry. Accordingly, Hanoi has successfully hosted many important events of national, regional and international scale, notably the US-North Korea Summit, the World Economic Forum on ASEAN, the 6th Greater Mekong Sub-region Summit, the 31st SEA Games and the 11th ASEAN Para Games, etc.

In fact, MICE tourism in Vietnam is considered to have great potential to reach international standards. For example, big cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, etc. have good facilities, experience in organizing conferences, award ceremonies, and large rewards. In particular, some of the leading MICE tourism markets in Southeast Asia such as Singapore have become boring for tourists. Because MICE visitors tend to seek experiences in pristine places, close to nature or learn about local life and culture after the conferences end. Therefore, Vietnam has great advantages to do MICE tourism such as cultural identity, rich cuisine, long and beautiful coastline, diverse natural landscapes, and safety.

However, at present, the MICE tourism market in Vietnam still has many limitations and has not really flourished like other countries in the region. Most of the MICE tours in our country still focus on domestic visitors on a small scale. The tourism industry does not have mechanisms and policies suitable for the MICE tourism trend. One of the challenges that Vietnam faces is infrastructure, because foreign MICE visitors are mainly luxury guests, requiring synchronous and high-quality infrastructure. In particular, human resources do not meet the international standards of foreign visitors.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Director of the Institute of Tourism Research, suggested that the Vietnamese tourism industry needs to develop mechanisms and policies for developing MICE tourism; invest in synchronous infrastructure, technical facilities, and typical tourism products at tourist centers; promote MICE tourism promotion; invest in developing diverse souvenir products for MICE tourism with regional characteristics; raise awareness and have certain understanding of MICE tourism; strengthen training on behavioral culture and ways to support tourists.
