Tourists complain of being 'ripped off' horribly, even cutting the cake costs an extra 20 euros

A restaurant in the tourist city of Palermo, Sicily, Italy has caused outrage after being "accused" of charging a cake cutting fee. According to The Sun , a family bought a cake when they came to this restaurant to celebrate their birthday and were "fined" an unexpected amount of money.

After the party, the family received the receipt and discovered they had been charged 20 euros (about 500,000 VND) to cut the cake into pieces.

The cost was one euro per attendee, although the group spent a considerable amount of money on the party.

The eatery lists the charge as "20 X Servizio Torta", which roughly translates to "20 X Cake Service".

Earlier, on August 8, a luxury bar in Italy's Lake Como charged customers a bizarre surcharge for cutting their sandwiches in half. The specific fee was £1.70.

One unhappy customer shared a photo of his Bar Pace receipt online as evidence of the puzzling charge.

The bill clearly shows the cost of cutting the cake listed as "diviso da meta", which is English for "divide in half", while the cake cost around £6, the cutting fee was a third.

The bar owner responded to Italian media by saying: "The customer is always right, but extra requests come at a cost. If a customer asks me to make two toasts, I have to use two plates, two napkins and bring them to the table with two hands."

Summer 2023 is set to be one of the most expensive in history after a series of scandals over exorbitant prices in cafes and restaurants hit foreign tourists as well as Italian visitors.

For example, a young mother travelling in the coastal town of Ostia was charged 2 euros to heat her baby's bottle in the microwave.

A couple was charged 60 euros for two coffees and two small bottles of water at the Cervo Hotel in Sardinia, although the restaurant owner told CNN the prices were clearly marked and the fee was mainly for a view of the hotel's expensive yachts…

These cases, dubbed “crazy charges” by local media, have seen a staggering 130% price increase in tourist areas in Italy this summer, according to consumer protection group Consumerism No Profit.

Prices have become so out of control – around 240% higher than other Mediterranean destinations – that many Italians are ditching their local favourites for their August holidays, opting instead for coastal countries like Albania and Montenegro.

Foreign tourists have more than made up for the decline in domestic visitors in Italy, with the Italian Tourism Ministry forecasting 68 million tourists will visit Italy over the summer, 3 million more than the pre-pandemic figure, making them the easiest target for 'rip-offs'.
