As reported, on the afternoon of March 28, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Warning Center, Institute of Earth Sciences (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) said that a 7.3 magnitude earthquake had just occurred in Myanmar.
Specifically, this earthquake occurred at 6:20:57 on March 28 (GMT), or 13:20:20 (Hanoi time), at coordinates 21.71 N - 96.02 E, depth 10 km.
The US Geological Survey recorded the magnitude of the earthquake at 7.7 on the Moment scale. Scientists confirmed that the epicenter of the earthquake was in central Myanmar, about 50km east of the city of Monywa.
Regarding this difference in magnitude, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh said that this is normal, the assessment agencies depend on the system to provide information quickly, then can adjust accordingly. The monitoring systems in that locality will usually make the most accurate assessment.
According to Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, this earthquake is very large, so the affected area can extend for thousands of kilometers. The impact depends on the intensity, size, distance from the earthquake and the ground at that location.
"However, the earthquake occurred far away from Vietnam, so the level of natural disaster risk assessment for Vietnam is zero, meaning it is unlikely to cause damage to Vietnam," said Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh. For the capital Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, earthquakes far away usually affect high-rise buildings, causing people to feel the shaking.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh said that this earthquake is not unusual, because in Myanmar's history there have been very strong earthquakes. Therefore, after a period of time, accumulating enough energy, it will release such earthquakes and affect the surrounding areas. Normally, large earthquakes will have aftershocks. However, the earthquake was far away from Vietnam, so the impact on our country is very small.
Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh said that currently, there are only warnings that earthquakes may occur in a certain area, but it is difficult to predict when an earthquake will occur. Even in Japan, there have been earthquakes that caused great damage, but the time of the earthquake is almost impossible to predict in advance.
