Digital technology businesses expected to bring in 10 billion USD from foreign markets

DNVN - Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuyen - Deputy Director of the Department of Information Technology and Communications Industry (Ministry of Information and Communications) said that there are currently 1,500 digital technology enterprises with revenue from foreign markets. Revenue from foreign markets in 2023 is 7.5 billion USD and is expected to be approximately 10 billion USD this year.

Speaking at the conference “Vietnamese digital technology enterprises going global: Opportunities and challenges” on October 17, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuyen - Deputy Director of the Department of Information Technology and Communications Industry (Ministry of Information and Communications) said that by the end of July 2024, the total number of digital technology enterprises in operation is estimated at over 51,000. An increase of nearly 6,000 enterprises compared to August 2023.

There are currently 1,500 digital technology companies with revenue from foreign markets. Revenue from foreign markets in 2023 was 7.5 billion USD and is expected to be approximately 10 billion USD this year.

Regarding foreign direct investment (FDI) in the technology and information sector, Mr. Tuyen commented that FDI in the 2020-2023 period grew by 15.4%. However, the proportion of this industry is still very small, showing that Vietnam still has room to continue to develop and attract foreign investors in the near future.

“The Ministry of Information and Communications is drafting the Law on Digital Technology Industry. The draft is expected to promote the development of the digital technology industry into an economic sector that contributes greatly to the country’s economy; making Vietnam the most favorable environment to nurture and develop digital technology enterprises,” said Mr. Tuyen.

Mr. Vu Van Chung - Deputy Director of the Foreign Investment Department (Ministry of Planning and Investment) said that Vietnam currently has 1,772 investment projects abroad (81 countries and territories) with a total registered capital of 22.12 billion USD. Besides traditional investment locations, foreign investment is gradually shifting to developed countries such as the United States, EU, Japan, Korea, Singapore...

In addition to traditional investment sectors, investment in high-tech, service, industrial production, and sectors with modern technical content is increasing significantly. In particular, overseas investment in the information and communications sector alone has 223 projects, with a total registered capital of 2.84 billion USD, accounting for 13% of total overseas investment capital.

“Over the past years, Vietnamese digital technology enterprises have grown rapidly in both quantity and competitiveness. The community of Vietnamese technology enterprises has been providing digital products, services and solutions for accelerating digital transformation, developing the digital economy and digital society. Thereby, contributing to narrowing the digital gap globally, joining hands with the international business community to build a digital world,” said Mr. Chung.

In 2022, FPT made its mark on the international technology map by being the first Vietnamese enterprise to launch a line of microchips applied in Internet of Things (IoT) products for the medical field. In 2023, FPT's chip products are starting to appear in the US and Japanese markets.

At the same time, FPT also expanded into other fields such as lighting, smart devices, automotive technology, and energy. 2022 is the first year FPT reached the revenue milestone of 1 billion USD from the international market in the field of digital transformation, putting Vietnam in second place on the digital map, after the software powerhouse India.

Viettel Military Industry and Telecommunications Group also had a successful 2022 in the international market with revenue reaching nearly 3 billion USD. Viettel is holding the position of No. 1 5G network operator in the markets of Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, East Timor and Burundi. Viettel is also a prominent Vietnamese enterprise implementing digital transformation for the countries of Haiti, Laos, etc.

Currently, many Vietnamese enterprises are investing in research and development of new technologies such as semiconductor chips, generative artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain technology, etc.
