Many schools' benchmark scores are at average levels.

A SERIES OF SCHOOLS ACCEPT BELOW 600 POINTS

Admission based on the score of the competency assessment exam is one of the early admission methods of many schools this year. With the exam organized by Ho Chi Minh City National University, the maximum total score of the entire exam is 1,200 points. To achieve an average score on this exam, candidates need to achieve 600 points or more.

However, there are currently some universities that still accept applications and announce admission scores using this method at 500 to under 600 points, which is below the average score of the exam. For example, Kien Giang University announced the admission benchmark score using the competency test scores of 20 majors at the same level of 550 points (except for 2 pedagogical majors).

Of the 8 majors of Saigon University of Technology, 7 majors have a benchmark score of 550 according to the competency assessment test method (except for information technology which takes 600 points).

In the first round of early admission, Eastern University of Technology also determined that most majors are below 600 points. Hung Vuong University considered the admission score of the first round of competency assessment test at 500 points. Similarly, 15 majors of Ho Chi Minh City University of Foreign Languages and Information Technology also have the same score of 500 points.

Notably, there are universities that also determine the qualifying score for admission by the below-average competency test score method for health science majors. Most recently, Nam Can Tho University has officially announced the standard score for early admission in the first round this year. Of the 4 majors considered by the Ho Chi Minh City National University competency test score method, there are 2 majors with a standard score of 550 points, including: medical imaging technology and medical laboratory technology.

Nguyen Tat Thanh University also announced the preliminary admission score (conditional admission) for the competency assessment test. Accordingly, some health majors have preliminary admission scores below 600, such as: pharmacy and preschool education 570 points; preventive medicine, nursing, medical laboratory technology only 550 points...

N IS THE INPUT THRESHOLD LOW?

Explaining the determination of this benchmark score, the Head of the Training Department of a university with a major that has a benchmark score of over 500 said that last year the major with the lowest benchmark score using this method at the school was 600 points. But this year, the exam results of the students tended to be lower, so the school adjusted the benchmark score of some majors below 600 points.

This year, more than 100,000 candidates took the competency assessment exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University.

"Not to mention, this competency assessment test also evaluates candidates based on a wide range of knowledge with many different criteria. It can be said that the standard score of 500 points of this test is even better than the average score of the high school transcript admission test," this person added.

However, the fact that schools set benchmark scores for majors below the average score of the competency test also causes much concern in society.

Admission based on competency test scores, does the Ministry have regulations on floor scores?

According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, candidates must meet the conditions to ensure the quality of admission to specific fields such as health sciences and teacher training. This regulation applies to all admission methods from considering high school graduation exam scores and early admission methods.

With the method of using high school graduation exam results, the Ministry of Education and Training will announce the admission threshold after the exam results are available. For other admission methods that do not use high school graduation exam scores, candidates must achieve good or higher or a graduation score of 6.5 points or higher for the following majors: nursing, preventive medicine, midwifery, dental prosthetics, medical testing, medical imaging, rehabilitation; physical education, sports training, music education, fine arts education, college-level preschool education. For the remaining majors, candidates must have a grade 12 academic performance of good or higher or a graduation score of 8 or higher.

Thus, candidates applying for admission based on the competency assessment exam scores into health science majors must meet the minimum academic requirements or graduation scores as prescribed above.

According to the analysis of the score spectrum of the competency assessment test of more than 100,000 candidates taking the exam of Ho Chi Minh City National University, the candidate with the highest score this year was 1,133 points, the number of candidates achieving 1,000 points or more in the first round was 152 and the second round was 109. Notably, the analysis of scores for each round of the exam showed that the average score of candidates was above 600 points. In recent years, most universities have taken the benchmark score for this admission method from 600 points or more. In particular, the schools and majors that are interested in the benchmark score are all from 700 points or more, some majors even have benchmark scores above 1,000. So, is it low for schools to set benchmark scores below 600?

Dr. Nguyen Quoc Chinh, Director of the Center for Testing and Training Quality Assessment (Ho Chi Minh City National University), said that to answer this question, it is necessary to conduct a large-scale comparative study of the results of the competency assessment test with the results of the high school graduation exam of the same candidate.

Mr. Chinh said: "Currently, according to the results of a small-scale survey conducted by Ho Chi Minh City National University, although the results of the two exams have different evaluation criteria, the general trend is that candidates with high scores in the competency assessment exam also have high scores in the high school graduation exam. But on the contrary, there are candidates who, despite scoring 300-400 points in the competency assessment exam, still have graduation exam scores above 15 points."
