Bridge degraded after 30 years of use

Thai River Bridge on Provincial Road 558B in Quang Kim Commune, Quang Trach District was built in 1996 and has now seriously degraded.

The bridge is over 100m long, with 6 spans, each span is arranged with 3 reinforced concrete beams, serving the travel of people in Quang Phu, Quang Kim and Quang Hop communes.

Thai River Bridge was built 30 years ago to serve 14,000 people and is deteriorating every day.

According to local people, the bridge is located in a saline area, so the steel corrosion phenomenon occurs very quickly, the bridge surface is peeling and cracking; the two ends of the bridge abutments are eroded, all the mortar is washed away, leaving only rubble stones.

The level of damage to the building is progressing rapidly, becoming increasingly seriously degraded, and at risk of collapse at any time.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong worriedly said: "Every day, people go to work, students go to school, so there are many people and vehicles passing by this bridge. The locality has a contract with 2 passenger vans, which transport high school students to school every day. The worry is that if heavy trucks pass by, there is a risk of the bridge collapsing."

The bridge piers are damaged and peeling.

Mr. Gia Minh Chinh, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Kim Commune, Quang Trach District, informed that the Thai River Bridge is near the connection point between the two rivers, Thai River and Loan River, flowing through the area. This bridge serves the traffic of people in Quang Hop Commune, Quang Kim to Quang Phu, students also cross the bridge to go to high school in the North of Quang Binh.

"The bridge is in a bad condition, and when heavy vehicles pass over it, it shakes violently. The local authorities want to repair the bridge to ensure people's safety," Mr. Chinh suggested.

Informing reporters of Giao thong Newspaper, the leader of the Department of Transport of Quang Binh province said that the Thai River Bridge was built in 1996. The bridge is 180m long, with a structure of 6 spans, each span is arranged with 3 normal reinforced concrete beams, with a design load of H10-X60. After nearly 30 years of use, the bridge has now degraded and is quite seriously damaged.

Through assessment, all pillars have cracks along the body. Some pillars have peeled off the protective concrete layer, the steel reinforcement is rusted, the cross-section is reduced and the load-bearing capacity has lost 50% compared to before.

Research on new bridge construction options

Faced with the current state of degraded bridges, the Department of Transport of Quang Binh province has contracted with the Center for Transport Science and Technology (Hanoi University of Transport) to inspect weak bridges in Quang Binh province, including the Thai River Bridge.

Quang Binh Province Department of Transport proposed banning four-wheeled vehicles from crossing the bridge to ensure safety.

Specifically, for the Thai River Bridge, the maximum oscillation amplitude of piers T1, T3 and T5 in the combined horizontal direction is 2.331mm, 0.72mm and 0.899mm respectively - greater than the allowable safety value of 0.7mm according to current standards.

For columns T2 and T4, the amplitude of oscillation has not exceeded the limit with the test load but has approached the allowable value. The concrete strength has seriously decreased (over 30%), the column is currently seriously cracked longitudinally, posing a potential safety risk.

"In the immediate future, we propose that the People's Committee of Quang Binh province allow all types of motor vehicles with 4 wheels or more to cross the bridge (only pedestrians, rudimentary vehicles, and motorbikes are allowed) to ensure safety.

While waiting for the new bridge construction project, the Department of Transport is allowed to organize emergency repairs to quickly fix the damage and serve the travel needs of the people," said the leader of the Department of Transport.

Authorities put up signs limiting the weight of the bridge.

Mr. Dang Huu Thuyet, Head of the Department of Transport Infrastructure Management (Department of Transport of Quang Binh province) said that in the long term, we propose to build a new bridge to replace the Thai River bridge.

According to Mr. Thuyet, if the Thai River bridge is repaired, its load capacity will be limited, which is not suitable for people's travel and production needs.

"During the period when motor vehicles with four wheels or more are banned from crossing the bridge, we will arrange people and put up signs to guide people to move on other suitable traffic routes," said Mr. Thuyet.
