Coach David Moyes said Everton did not deserve to lose to Liverpool. |
In the early morning of April 3, Diogo Jota's goal in the 57th minute brought Liverpool their 100th derby victory, bringing them closer to the Premier League title. However, the away team was not satisfied with the decisions from referee Sam Barrott and his assistants.
Jota's goal in the 57th minute was controversial, as Ryan Gravenberch passed the ball to Luis Diaz, who was clearly in an offside position. Everton defender Tarkowski then intercepted the pass towards Diaz, allowing Jota to score in a legitimate position.
Coach Moyes believes that the referee should have blown Liverpool offside in that situation, because Diaz was behind Everton's defense, and the Colombian player then stepped up to have a dispute with Tarkowski, affecting the situation where Jota received the ball and scored.
“He (Luis Diaz) was offside,” Moyes said after the game. “I’m not looking for an explanation. I just told the referees I was disappointed. The decision was easy to see. Our player was in the offside trap and Diaz was behind him affecting Tarkowski.”
Everton claimed Diaz was involved in the incident, but the referees deemed the Colombian had no impact. |
Moyes expressed doubts about the refereeing team, especially the assistants: “I’m not sure the linesmen did a good job tonight. Sometimes the flag was early, sometimes it was late. I don’t think they did a good job.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot said that the offside rule was not in place, as Tarkowski had intercepted the pass before it reached Diaz. However, the Dutchman also said that he did not like the offside rule: "It (the offside rule) does not help the team to attack. But the application of the rule this time was beneficial for us."
The Times said VAR and the refereeing team determined that Diaz - who was in an offside position - did not affect Tarkowski's cut-back.
Under the current offside rules as set out by FIFA and IFAB, although Gravenberch passed the ball towards Diaz, who was in an offside position at the time, Tarkowski's touch on the ball made the subsequent play legal.
