Despite their important role, basic science subjects have gradually lost their appeal in recent years, with the number of candidates registering to study and the entrance score decreasing, while Vietnam is always in the world's top 10 in terms of international Olympic achievements in the period 2015-2024 in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, etc.

The main reason comes from the lack of awareness of the importance and potential of basic science, as well as the limited support and investment policies for this field, which have not created a strong enough motivation to attract talented students.

Along with that, career prospects for basic science fields are not really attractive, often with low income, and the work requires deep expertise and great dedication.

These factors make fewer and fewer students choose to pursue basic science, creating a significant challenge for the development of this field in Vietnam.

Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW identifies the development of science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as decisive factors for national development. To have breakthroughs in the development of science, technology and innovation, it is necessary to first develop basic science to create a solid foundation.

The general objective of the Program "Improving the capacity of training and basic scientific research at Ho Chi Minh City National University to reach advanced levels, on par with the region and the world in the period 2025-2030, with a vision to 2045" is to make basic scientific research the foundation for developing national engineering, technology, and innovation, nurturing scientific talents, and being the premise for inventions and mastering strategic technologies.

Thereby, contributing to rapid and sustainable development, promoting social progress, enriching the treasure of human knowledge and Vietnamese culture.

To develop talents in the field of science, it is necessary to exempt tuition fees and provide scholarships for talented students and postgraduates studying basic sciences.

Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City National University, some important targets of the Program in the period of 2025-2030 include: Training about 1,000 talented bachelors and engineers, 600 masters, 300 doctors in the field of basic science; 36,000 bachelors and engineers; 3,600 masters; 600 doctors in the field of engineering and technology.

At the same time, 300 outstanding young scientists, leading scientists, 100 visiting professors from universities and leading technology corporations in the world were invited; over 20,000 scientific articles in the field of basic science and related fields were published in prestigious international scientific journals.

Research groups in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Earth Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Economics, Management, Linguistics; centers of excellence in artificial intelligence, chip-semiconductor technology, biotechnology-biomedical technology, advanced materials technology, etc. have reached the most advanced level in the region and the world.
