According to data released on September 11 by the General Department of Customs, in the second half of August 2024 (August 16 - August 31), Vietnam's total export turnover was 20.7 billion USD, an increase of 13.1% over the same period last year.
In the second half of August, Vietnam recorded an additional export of footwear worth billions of USD with 1.08 billion USD, an increase of 21.2% over the same period last year.
In addition, computers, electronic products and components continued to be the items with the highest export turnover at 3.73 billion USD, up 28.6% over the same period last year; followed by machinery, equipment, tools and other spare parts with 2.68 billion USD, up 28.8% over the same period last year.

Vietnam also exported phones and components worth 2.47 billion USD, down 9.1% year-on-year and the only item in the billion-dollar group to see a decline in turnover during the period. Textile exports also brought in 2.19 billion USD, up 15.4% year-on-year.
Of the 45 main export items in the second half of August 2024, Vietnam had 13 items with a decrease in turnover compared to the same period last year and 32 items with an increase in value. Crude oil was the item with the largest decrease of 73% compared to the same period last year, reaching 28 million USD; coal also decreased sharply by 66.8%, to 5 million USD.
In contrast, fruit and vegetable exports increased by 72% over the same period last year, the item with the highest growth rate, reaching 492 million USD.
In the agricultural and aquatic products group, Vietnam also recorded an increase of 42.3% in coffee exports compared to the same period last year, reaching 201 million USD. Next was tea, up 39.6% over the same period last year, reaching 16.2 million USD; pepper increased 26.2% over the same period last year, reaching 57.2 million USD; cashew nut exports increased 13.3% over the same period last year, reaching 218 million USD. Seafood export turnover also increased 10.1% over the same period last year, reaching 540 million USD.
Contrary to the above growth, rice export turnover decreased by 6% compared to the same period, reaching 263 million USD; cassava and cassava product export decreased by 31% compared to the same period last year, to 44 million USD.
Total export turnover of agricultural and aquatic products reached 1.83 billion USD, up 21.1% compared to 1.51 billion USD in the same period last year and accounting for 8.8% of Vietnam's export turnover in the second half of August.
On the other hand, in the second half of August 2024, Vietnam spent 17.2 billion USD to import goods from other countries, an increase of 14.5% over the same period last year.
The two items with a turnover of billions of USD were computers, electronic products and components with 4.87 billion USD, up 14.3% over the same period; machinery, equipment, tools and other spare parts reached 2.27 billion USD, up 23.9% over the same period last year. The total turnover of the two items above reached 7.14 billion USD, accounting for 41.5% of the total import value of goods of Vietnam in the second half of August 2024 (August 16 - August 31).
In the raw materials and fuel group, Vietnam spent 256 million USD to import crude oil, an increase of 80% over the same period; in contrast, imported gasoline decreased by 52%, to 215 million USD.
Vietnam imported fabric worth 646 million USD, up 10% over the same period; textile and footwear materials worth 323 million USD, up 17% over the same period last year; textile fibers worth 144 million USD, up 52% over the same period last year.
Vietnam also spent 539 million USD to import raw plastic materials, up 14.7% over the same period; imported plastic products with 394 million USD, up 8.5% over the same period last year.
In the second half of August 2024, Vietnam spent 731 million USD to import agricultural and aquatic products, down 4.8% over the same period last year. Corn was the item with the highest turnover at 233 million USD, up 38% over the same period last year. Following were cashew nuts with 141 million USD, down 16.7% over the same period last year; vegetables and fruits with 118 million USD, up 14.3% over the same period last year; aquatic products with 116 million USD, down 12.6% over the same period last year.
Wheat imports recorded a sharp decrease of 43.3% compared to the same period last year, reaching 52 million USD; soybeans decreased by 66.8% compared to the same period last year, reaching 17.2 million USD. Milk and dairy products imports increased by 7.6% compared to the same period last year, reaching 52 million USD.
Of the 53 main imported items in the second half of August 2024, 12 items recorded a decrease in value compared to the same period last year and 41 items increased in value. Liquefied petroleum gas was the item with the highest growth rate of 255% compared to the same period last year...
